The 12 hour stomach flu?

My 9 1/2 month old son has an upset tummy. . .threw up a little this afternoon and again about 15 minutes ago after having 2 oz of his bottle. This flu and gone around my entire house starting with me, then my husband, my daughter last night and now my son. We each had it for about 12 hours. Any suggestions on what I can give him to make him feel better and hold down some food? He eats solids if that makes a difference in your answers.

Thanks

The rule of thumb with the stomach flu is to not give any solids until the tummy has rested after throwing up otherwise it'll just reject the next thing. Milk might not be such a good thing quite yet either, I'd try giving him plain water first and see if that stays down and if he's still hungry, try giving him his bottle. If he's not acting hungry and is sleeping, let him sleep and just keep an eye on him. He won't starve if you put off feeding him for a little while. If anything, you can try calling his pediatrician and see what they recommend, but I've always been told to let the tummy rest and then feed only Bananas, Applesauce, Rice, or Toast (The BRAT diet.) for the first twelve hours or so after the last time he got sick.

You can try having him suck on a candy cane--I've heard that peppermint is good for ill tummies.

    12 Hour Stomach Virus

Don't feed your child while his tummy is upset ... that can cause him to get much sicker than he is now. Get someone to go to the pharmacy and get a bottle of 'Coke syrup' ... there's no cocaine in it, but it's the syrup used in places that have 'soda machines' to make Coca Cola. Give your son 1/4 teaspoon of the warm (room temperature) syrup. If he throws it up, wait an hour and try again with it. If he doesn't throw up, wait half and hour and give him 1/2 teaspoon. Don't feed him until he can go a whole four hours without vomiting. There is enough sugar in the syrup to keep him happy, and his tummy can get over the virus more quickly with no food. After two hours you may give him a bottle of Pedialyte (water with vitamins and minerals that is made for babies) up to 2 ounces, but if he throws that up, you'll have to start the coke syrup over again. Hang in there, because babies are very different from even toddlers. Just watch your son for signs of dehydration (dark skin around the eyes, 'sunken skin,' etc.) If he gets dehydrated, take him to the emergency room IMMEDIATELY! For now, water is 'good enough' and the coke syrup should help, too ... I'm a mom and had a baby who did get dehydrated and spent three days in the hospital. He's now 33, and has two daughters of his own!

Call your pediatrician for advice. Dehydration can set in quickly in small children so you need to watch out for that. Sometimes it is best to just let them sleep and not give anything for a few hours. It gives the tummy a chance to rest. They you can slowly offer small amounts of water or child electrolyte substitution fluids such as Pedialyte but call your pediatrician first for advice. The biggest mistake parents make is thinking the child is hungry and forcing fluids or foods which sometimes just makes matters worse. Good luck and make sure every one in the house washes their hands often.

i had something very similar not too long ago. i dont know if you also had a fever after, but there is not much you can do to help. make sure he drinks plenty of water, crackers and cheese and fruit should be fine, nothing hard on the tummy. just plenty to drink.

Dry, plain crackers are best for an upset tummy. Good luck!

Oh, and lots of water or pedialyte.

Don't give him anything without asking your doctor about it..with him being that young..almost all medications are extremely hazardous. You're just gonna have to do what you can and hope he gets rid of it fast.
