Are any of you vegan or vegetarian while pregnant or nursing?
I'm just curious if any of you are vegetarian or vegan and are pregnant or nursing?
I'm 32 weeks pregnant and a vegetarian, but I also don't drink milk or eat eggs and I won't while I nurse either. Are any of you like that? If you are, are you planning on raising your child that way too?
We drink soy milk in the house and eat plenty of beans. Green veggies are loaded with protein too so that's where I get most of it!
I was just curious if there were others out there who maintained this diet and lifestyle.
My doctor is more than okay with it. It was his nurse who gave me a hard time and told me I was unhealthy for choosing to not eat meat.

I was a vegetarian. Then I became pregnant and protein is VERY VERY important..while pregnant. So I started eating meat..Not alot though.
I breastfed too until he was 6 mths..and I continued to eat meat until then.
At 6 mths I weened. And now we are both vegetarians (My baby and me).
I suggest eating a lot of beans..and other forms of protein..to compensate. They have protein smoothies by Odwalla and Berkshire farms.
Thats what we drink majority of the time. Make sure you are taking your prenatal vitamins...That's majority of what you need.

Hi, I used to live on The Farm in Summertown Tn and we were vegetarians (no animal products).
You can still get a good complete diet but you've got to work at it. Soymilk instead of dairy milk. Tofu, tempeh, or just regular beans along with a grain are good vegie sources of complete protein.
A prenatal vitamin/mineral supplement (with folic acid) is undoubtedly a good idea.

My sister was vegetarian when she was pregnant, although she did sometime crave meat and gave into her cravings because she thought if she was craving it she must need it. She had a very healthy 10 pound 1 baby boy and was able to breastfeed.
