What are my chances of getting into graduate school?
I just completed the requirements for my Bachelor’s degree from a well-respected public university in Florida. I majored in Biomedical Sciences, minored in Public Health, and I also graduated from the Honors College.
I have an overall GPA of 3.87. I’ve completed 165 GPA credit hours of college courses. I’ve made 2 B’s and 2 C’s early in my college career, but I’ve made A’s in all of my other courses in college, especially in all courses in my junior and senior years.
I am now interested in pursuing a career in chemistry. My ultimate goal is to earn a Ph.D. in chemistry. However, I only want to enroll in a M.S. program in chemistry for now. I only wish to enter a graduate program at a decent university in Florida (not Ivy League, but very well-respected) for my Masters. I’ll aim high later.
I’ve completed 34 credit hours in chemistry courses and earned a 3.98 GPA in those courses. Chemistry courses I’ve taken includes general chemistry I/II, organic chemistry I/II, biochemistry, analytical chemistry, inorganic chemistry, and among others.
I am part of two Honor societies and was listed on the Chemistry Honor Roll during a semester.
Everything looks good so far. However, …
I did not do so well on the GRE. I only scored a 1000. I did not have much time to study because I was working on my Honors Thesis the entire time I was suppose to study for the examination. Plus, I had to deal with family problems. Overall, I had less than a week to study for the GRE.
Other than the 2 semesters of Honors Thesis, I do not have much research experience. My Honors Thesis was not related to chemistry, but rather environment/ecology. Also, I have no internships/volunteer work or extracurricular activities.
I plan to get letters of recommendations from: my mentor that supervised my Honors Thesis (a great letter, actually), my general chemistry II laboratory professor (a good one, hopefully), and two chemistry professors in which I’ve taken two classes each with them (hopefully a good one from one of them).
In addition, I believe I have a good personal statement explaining: Why this program?; What makes you different from other students?; Why should I be admitted?; How do I know this program is right for me?; What obstacles have I overcome?; etc.
Overall, it seems that my GRE score is a weakness in my application; it’s not very competitive, and it’s not where I want it to be. However, I have no choice to stick with these scores for now. I don’t have time to take the GRE again, as I have to submit applications to the programs I’m interested in soon. Again, right now I only want to pursue a Master and hopefully I can get accepted with my current GRE scores. Just to let you know, I will take the GRE again in the future and I will consider aiming higher for my Ph.D.
What do you guys think?

I think you'll be okay, particularly given where you're looking. If you have space to offer up an explanation in your application materials, just note that you were too focused on other concerns to study at the time and you hope they'll see your GPA as more indicative of your potential - though if you don't, I suspect they'll decide that on their own based on everything else. Good luck!

i think of fairly some faculties will seem at your artwork journey particularly, as that's what maximum of PhD artwork is approximately. determine you're making the attempt to talk individually to the admissions boards on the universities to which you will persist with -- that usually facilitates to place a guy or woman with a checklist. you may even touch particular professors with whom you are able to elect to do analyze, and practice them how inspired you're. I had a 2.9 GPA as an undergrad and have so a ways been ordinary into 3 graduate courses (ok, so I had some profession differences ;-). That being reported, the GPA became into from an exact college, and that i'm a savant while it includes standardized assessments, so i became into interior the 99th percentile for the GREs.

It you aren't applying to UF then you have an excellent chance. If you are... maybe you should take the GRE again?
