  • Which Chemistry Graduate Program should I go to? URGENT!?

I live in Florida and I recently received a Bachelor of Science degree in Biomedical Sciences. I finished with a 3.87 GPA, did okay on my GRE general test, and I did an Honors Thesis. I’m interested in getting a Ph.D. in Chemistry. I haven’t decided which Chemistry I want to study, but it’s likely that I’m going to choose between Organic Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry, and Physical Chemistry. In the long-term, I would like to get accepted to a position at a university where I can conduct and be involved in chemical research, and I would also like to teach chemistry as a professor. I applied and got accepted to the Ph.D. programs at the following schools. However, I do not know which school I want to go to. I checked out the programs from each school and I looked at various rankings, but I still can’t decide. Please help me make this choice and explain with reasoning on where I should go, as I have a life changing decision to make. Any suggestions are welcome. Thanks.

    University of Florida

I always wanted to go to UF. It’s definitely the top university in Florida and it is considered as a “Public Ivy”. They will pay my tuition and offer me a teaching assistantship currently worth $19,000 a year. If I go there, I don’t have to deal with residency issues as I am already a Florida resident, and I don’t have to move very far from home. It’s going to be the cheapest of the schools I applied to cost-wise. However, there are a lot of people that go there and I’m afraid that they might have a budget crisis.

    Georgia Institute of Technology

It’s a public Institute of Technology and they have a great chemistry program. There is a chemical ecology professor over there that I really want to work with. They are offering me a fellowship that is worth up to $28,000. They are very strong in terms of academics and they offer a huge number of chemistry graduate courses. Out of all the schools I applied to, it was the hardest school I got into. Not as good as the other Institutes of Technology though.

    Indiana University – Bloomington

From what I heard, they have a very strong chemistry program. Their Organic Chemistry and Inorganic Chemistry departments are excellent. It’s one of the best places to go for academia. They are offering me a five year reward package that includes a first year stipend of $21,373.20, plus $24,617 for tuition fee remission, $1,913 for healthcare, and Chemistry Department Fellowship of $1,000 for my first year of graduate work. However, I keep hearing rumors that it’s a party school.

    Iowa State University

It’s a good research school, especially in the chemistry department. They are also good in academics. They will pay my tuition and offer me a stipend with teaching or research assistantship currently worth $22,800 per year. I don’t know how good the university is in terms of reputation though.

    Johns Hopkins University

Johns Hopkins University is definitely a good school. It is no doubt one of the best schools in the country and perhaps the whole world. They will pay for my tuition and offer me monthly stipends, with the exact amount to be determined. A degree from Johns Hopkins is certainly good for my career. However, since it is a private university, it can be a bit pricey and it’s going to be very tough to live in Baltimore. Even though it is a great university overall, I hear that their chemistry program is just plain average.

  • How to get rid of Malware on Laptop.?

I have a Windows HP Pavilion Laptop and it has recently been infected with a malware or virus of some sort. Here is what it is doing to my computer.

I turn on the computer and it goes to the screen with all the icons like it normally does. However, in a matter of 5 minutes, it suddenly goes to this blue screen and then the computer shuts down and restarts itself. This process continues and continues. I don't have much time to do anything on my computer, like a virus scan or system restore, because it keeps restarting.

I was wondering if someone can help me get rid of this virus and return my computer to normal. Thanks a lot and any help is appreciated.

  • Differential Equations?

Anybody know how to do DE's?

Please help me on this question.

    Solve the following differential equation.

    d²y/dx² + 4dy/dx + 5y = 0

    The boundary conditions are y(0) = 1; dy/dx (at x = 0) = -3

  • Is it possible to pursue a second Bachelor’s and a first Master’s at the same time?

I’ve heard many stories of people questioning whether they should go back to school to pursue a second Bachelor’s degree or go for a Master’s degree. I was just wondering if it is possible to do both at the same time. Could you take courses that apply to the second Bachelor’s and courses that apply to the Master’s in the same college semester?

In this case, I’m taking about pursuing a second Bachelor’s degree in one field and, at the same time, pursuing a Master’s degree in a different area/field (i.e. second Bachelor’s in Psychology, M.B.A.; second Bachelor’s in Mathematics, Master’s in Chemistry).

  • What are my chances of getting into graduate school?

I just completed the requirements for my Bachelor’s degree from a well-respected public university in Florida. I majored in Biomedical Sciences, minored in Public Health, and I also graduated from the Honors College.

I have an overall GPA of 3.87. I’ve completed 165 GPA credit hours of college courses. I’ve made 2 B’s and 2 C’s early in my college career, but I’ve made A’s in all of my other courses in college, especially in all courses in my junior and senior years.

I am now interested in pursuing a career in chemistry. My ultimate goal is to earn a Ph.D. in chemistry. However, I only want to enroll in a M.S. program in chemistry for now. I only wish to enter a graduate program at a decent university in Florida (not Ivy League, but very well-respected) for my Masters. I’ll aim high later.

I’ve completed 34 credit hours in chemistry courses and earned a 3.98 GPA in those courses. Chemistry courses I’ve taken includes general chemistry I/II, organic chemistry I/II, biochemistry, analytical chemistry, inorganic chemistry, and among others.

I am part of two Honor societies and was listed on the Chemistry Honor Roll during a semester.

Everything looks good so far. However, …

I did not do so well on the GRE. I only scored a 1000. I did not have much time to study because I was working on my Honors Thesis the entire time I was suppose to study for the examination. Plus, I had to deal with family problems. Overall, I had less than a week to study for the GRE.

Other than the 2 semesters of Honors Thesis, I do not have much research experience. My Honors Thesis was not related to chemistry, but rather environment/ecology. Also, I have no internships/volunteer work or extracurricular activities.

I plan to get letters of recommendations from: my mentor that supervised my Honors Thesis (a great letter, actually), my general chemistry II laboratory professor (a good one, hopefully), and two chemistry professors in which I’ve taken two classes each with them (hopefully a good one from one of them).

In addition, I believe I have a good personal statement explaining: Why this program?; What makes you different from other students?; Why should I be admitted?; How do I know this program is right for me?; What obstacles have I overcome?; etc.

Overall, it seems that my GRE score is a weakness in my application; it’s not very competitive, and it’s not where I want it to be. However, I have no choice to stick with these scores for now. I don’t have time to take the GRE again, as I have to submit applications to the programs I’m interested in soon. Again, right now I only want to pursue a Master and hopefully I can get accepted with my current GRE scores. Just to let you know, I will take the GRE again in the future and I will consider aiming higher for my Ph.D.

    What do you guys think?

  • Evaluate This Trigonometric Integral?

I’m going to take Physical Chemistry II next semester and one of the prerequisites for the course is Calculus II. I’ve met all the requirements to take the course, but I haven’t taken Calculus II in years. I was a pro at this stuff back then, but now I forgot everything. Anyways, I’m doing integration problems in my old Calculus book to help me prepare for the class. I came across one trigonometric integral that I could not solve and I was wondering if any of you guys know how to solve it. Here is the integral:

    ∫ (tan^8 x)(sec x) dx

This is an even-numbered problem in my book, which means I do not know the final answer or how to solve this integral (as my book only show solutions for odd-numbered problems). I’d really appreciate it if someone shows me how to evaluate this integral. 10 points for the best answer. Please show work.

  • Can You Solve This Math/Logic Problem?

I was given this question as a group project question for a genetics class. How is this related to genetics? I have no idea. Anyways, the question is this:

“A friend shows you three closed boxes, one of which contains a prize, and asks you to choose one. Your friend then opens one of the two remaining boxes, a box she knows is empty. At that point, she gives you the opportunity to change your choice to the last remaining box. Should you? Why or why not?”

I already know the answer. I just want to see if you guys know it.

10 points for the best answer. Show your work and defend your reasoning.

  • HELP! How to raise GRE Verbal Score?

First of all, I would like the say that according to me (a Chemistry major), the verbal section of the GRE is a horrible way to evaluate what you learned in college or how well you will perform in graduate school. I’ve never seen the word INVECTIVE in my college career, and how would this word help me to do research in chemistry? I’m a bright student with a high GPA (3.87) from a well-respected university in Florida, but I’m really struggling with my verbal skills. Every person has their weaknesses. I just took the GRE and I only scored a 400 on the verbal section, and I believe that this was WITH luck, as I completely guessed on the majority of reading comprehension problems at the end of the section because I was running out of time. Overall, I think my performance on the verbal score should be somewhere in the 300s. I studied for the GRE for a few weeks using the Kaplan book.

On the antonyms and analogies part of the verbal section, they gave me some words that I’ve never seen before in my life. (What the hell is a “DONNYBROOK”?!!!). They expect me to know these words. How am I supposed to know these words? Do they expect me to memorize an entire dictionary? Because I’ll do that if that’s what it will take to get these questions correct. I also struggle with the sentence completions. They said everything I need is given within the sentence. However, I DON’T SEE IT!

The reading part of verbal section is another story. It is very different than reading Chemistry and other books in college. When it comes to some random passage, I’m a TERRIBLE reader, and my reading comprehension is really bad. I’m also not that fast of a reader. I read a random passage and I have no idea what it means. Or I read a passage, I have some idea what it means, but when I chose the answers relating to what I think of the story, it turns out that my chosen answer has nothing to do with the details of the passage. They recommended that I should read high published articles like the Wall Street Journal, but it doesn’t work for me.

Anyways, I’m going to take the GRE again to try to get at least a 500 on the section so that I can get into the Chemistry program I want. This requires me to increase my verbal score by 100 points, maybe more, because remember, I think I got lucky the first time! I hear people getting 500s on the verbal section and they believe that their score is bad. Believe me, I would DREAM for that score.

Do any of you have any suggestions that will definitely help me raise my GRE verbal scores to get the score I want? I’m willing to accept all reasonable solutions. Any study guides, techniques, classes, or other motives will do.

  • Which Chemistry programs can I get into with my GRE scores?

I just graduated with my Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Sciences degree from a Florida university. I also completed an Honors Thesis and graduated from the Honors College. I am interested in pursuing a graduate degree in Chemistry. For now, I want to be admitted to a Masters in Chemistry program, and from there, I can work on my Doctoral degree. I am part of two Honors society and was listed on the Chemistry Honor Roll in one semester. I received Dean’s List or Chancellor’s List in nearly every semester of college. My overall GPA is 3.87, my institution GPA is 3.92, and my GPA within chemistry courses (34 credit hours) is 3.98. Other than Honors Thesis, I don’t have much research experience.

I recently took the GRE and I am extremely worried about my GRE scores. My Verbal score is 400 and my Quantitative score is 600. Analytical writing score I pending. Overall, I don’t think I did so well, as it is not as high, as 600V or 700Q like I wanted. I’m afraid that my GRE scores are low compared to other students who have scored higher. I do not want to take the GRE again.

My goal is to enter a decent, well-known university, not those fancy and exceptional universities like Princeton or Yale. I was wondering if you can recommend me any decent schools with good chemistry programs based on my GRE scores. Do you think I have a chance of getting accepted to these schools? I prefer to attend a university in Florida, but you can also list any schools outside Florida.

    Thanks.
