Land plants utilise chlorophyll in the photosynthesis process. In deep water where the light is poor chlorophyll is of little use. Red seaweeds instead employ pigments known as phycoblins, with phycocyanin being particularly important. These pigments are able to use the different wave lengths of light which penetrate deeper water.
