Why is it that people don't dress up to go to nice restaurants anymore?

Dressing casual for a casual restaurant is fine. But I personally miss dress codes at fancy restaurants. If you are going to a fine dining establishment you should dress the part. A suit or at least nice slacks and a sport coat for men. Going in to a place like that wearing jeans or shorts is disrespectful to the place I feel. Comments?

Update:

Skye, it is NOT acceptable if the place is an expensive upscale place. If I am going to spend 300.00 on a dinner for two, I don't want to see people in jeans, shorts and tshirts. If I want that, I will go to Applebees.

Update 2:

No problem Skye. If I want to take my lady out for her birthday, it is not going to be a casual place. You just keep eating at Micky D's, I will go to real restaurants.

I agree, I like a good suit, I miss the '50s where men worse suits a lot more than today. If you're going to a nice place, it just sets an atmosphere if you don't see people wearing informal clothes.

I agree completely. You know what? You're very smart, you like the Beatles and think the same things as me. Of course, I'm not the kind that likes to go to fancy, expensive places but when I do I make sure to do my hair and put on a nice sweater/dress. If only I could have been born before this horrid Era.

I have noticed that society is getting more and more casual.. and less and less respectful.

You can see this happening in number of areas... one of these areas is dress code is expensive restaurants.

Personally for me, bring back the days where people dressed up on sundays and special occasions, children had respect... hey don't get me started!

no longer each and each person will gown great. human beings positioned on what they want to positioned on. human beings do gown great at present, human beings only have different personalities. the garments they positioned on convey out who they're interior and out of doors.

Yes, I agree- but restaurants have to move with the times to be able to survive....

There are certainly some (more expensive) places that people wouldn't get away with casual dress, but they tend to be more exclusive. People are willing to pay more for a place where everyone is well dressed, polite, and well mannered.

The reason is that most restaurants don't want to turn away paying customers just because they are dressed casually, especially if it doesn't seem to bother other customers.

Personally, most of the people I know would at least make some effort when going to a 'fancy' restaurant, because it's not something you do every day.

Standards have changed. Look at today's celebrities. They are no where near as glamorous as stars such as Bogart, Cary Grant, Dorothy Dandridge, Sidney Poitier, Betty Davis, and Katherine Hepburn to name a few...
