What's the point of a body pillow in late pregnancy?

I keep hearing that now that I'm over 6 months pregnant, I surely must want a body pillow so I can sleep on my side... or surely I'll want a pillow between my legs.

Clearly I'm missing the point because I can't imagine any of those things being comfortable. I feel perfectly padded already and anyway, I would be totally overheated with a body pillow (already sleep with no covers & a fan going). The pillow-between-legs would just stop me from switching sides.

What concept am I missing here?

I never liked the body pillow, but I did use a regular pillow between my knees. I was pregnant with twins and my body was way out of alignment. When I was on my side, there was too much pressure on my knees and hips and the pillow helped with some of it.

Instead of a body pillow, I used a small wedge shaped pillow to help support the baby bump. It was small enough so that I could roll over and move it with me but it helped to support my bump and prevent me from rolling too forward on it etc . . .

    Best wishes!

Having a pillow between your legs helps keep your back in alignment, which you'll appreciate when you start having back pain. As your belly gets bigger, you'll normally want support under it because the weight of it will otherwise pull on your back and cause back pain.

My pillow is u-shaped and does both of these plus it supports my back. I absolutely wake up in pain when I'm forced to travel and sleep without it.

It's about relieving back problems from sleeping on your side all the time. The body pillow can allign your legs/body in more comfortable way while sleeping, whether it sleeping with both legs bent or just one (to sleep further on your stomach). I was given one and don't use it every night, but some nights it's worth the hassle of moving it about, especially late in the pregnancy.

it helps keep the blood flowing thru ur legs during the night, and then ur veins wont show up that much bc wen u sleep on ur side, the leg on top squashes the other one and reduces blood flow tru it.

At 6 months I was asking this same question... now that I have less than 4 weeks left... I would kill anyone who touches my body pillow.. it just keeps everything in line.. my stomach is so heavy that it tilts me when I lay on my sides and gives me the worst back aches and then it dealigns my knees and makes me legs and knees ache and the body pillow just fixes it all!!! Enjoy this stage of pregnancy for me it was the best lol

If you're comfortable, there's no need. I liked my body pillow. It can help support that belly, and you can rest your head on it and put it between your legs. You can place it behind you for support if you want to sort of lie on your back. It certainly isn't a necessity. If you have enough regular pillows, and you feel you need to utilize these practices for better sleep, you don't have to have a body pillow.

I am 8 months and I am using a body pillow. It helps support you when you sit but I use it for when I sleep. It makes such a big difference because its uncomfortable when you try to sleep normally in late pregnancy.

The reason you will want a body pillow is after your so far along it is comfortable when laying on your side to place it under your tummy. Really you will want it.

Some people really have issues adjusting to not sleeping on their stomachs or backs and the pillow helps them sleep on their side by allowing them to redistribute their weight a little bit. It also releases pressure on your legs and lets your body lie naturally "flat" on its side instead of all curved over. :P
