  • In ceramics, can you draw with slip on bisque?

I'm thinking of getting some bisqueware beads to use as a starting point, but can I customize the surface texture further using lines of slip? Slip-stamped textures?

Would I be better off with some kind of puffy underglaze and if so, what can I use that won't mix with colors on top?

    Thanks for your advice!

  • 9 month old eats/drinks almost 50 oz a day?! Is this OK?

My 9 month old daughter eats 20 to 24 ounces of solid food (purees and chunky stuff and finger food) in a day... AND drinks about four 6-oz bottles, sometimes more!

This seems kind of crazy to me -- my older daughter didn't eat nearly this much.

Her pediatrician appointment is next week so we'll ask him for guidance too, obviously, but... what's your experience? Is this as over-the-top as I imagine it is?

  • Comcast or Verizon FiOS for Montgomery County?

We have Comcast now for internet, but they seem so unreliable and it takes days to get a tech out for repairs. Is FiOS any better?

I'm talking about reliability and prompt service calls, not bandwidth...

  • Will Facebook tell someone if I un-friend them?

Recently a friend's wall posts have been really annoying me with their content. I know I could just hide the person, but I would like to just disassociate myself from this person -- without drama. If I de-friend the person, will Facebook announce it to the world? To them?

  • Siblings 20 months apart: Advice on getting along?

Turns out I'm pregnant again (yay!) and I already have a one-year-old girl. This kid is due sometime in December, assuming the pregnancy works out.

Anybody have advice on ensuring they get along as well as possible? I understand it may cycle in and out depending on age. Also, don't know if this would be a boy or girl yet -- does that make a difference, in your experience?

Thank you for all constructive replies! :)

  • Help me understand the concept of "acceptance" in the Zen sense?

I always hear the phrase "A zen-like acceptance" and I'm trying to understand how that differs from apathy or giving up on making changes. From what I've read the real "Zen" interpretation is that acceptance involves taking responsibility for either leaving the situation the way it is, or changing it... Is that a generally understood definition? I'd like to understand this concept more, so any interpretations, links, or advice very welcome!

  • Good writing instructor in the Washington D.C. area?

We're looking for a business or journalism writing instructor to teach an in-house group class for about 7 people. Any suggestions? What were your experiences with the person you're suggesting?

  • Does the 2-day estimate for Priority Mail include the shipping day? The receipt day?

Just trying to figure this out. If something was shipped Priority Mail (received by post office) on Tuesday, September 8... does that mean it gets here Thursday?

  • Baby can turn on side -- no more swaddling?

My 2.5 month old daughter has turned to her side all on her own a couple of times. While this is great, now I'm afraid to swaddle her because maybe she'll turn the rest of the way over and be trapped. (even more likely with her arms constrained...)

So I guess I need to stop swaddling her, eh? Trouble is, she sleeps so much better that way... any ideas?

  • What does heartburn feel like?

I'm pregnant and supposedly I can expect to get heartburn later. I've never felt it before, though I have had acid reflux upon occasion.

What does it feel like? Why do people sometimes mistake it for a heart attack?

  • I hear breastfeeding permanently changes your breasts; in what way?

From what I hear your breasts are "never the same again" after breastfeeding. What is the big change?

I mean, all the pre-birth breast growth and initial milk production stretching/sagging would be the same whether women breastfeed or not, so what is it about _continuing_ to breastfeed that's different?

(I will breastfeed if I can, this question isn't a factor in any way; I am just wondering.)

    Thanks for your advice!

  • What's the point of a body pillow in late pregnancy?

I keep hearing that now that I'm over 6 months pregnant, I surely must want a body pillow so I can sleep on my side... or surely I'll want a pillow between my legs.

Clearly I'm missing the point because I can't imagine any of those things being comfortable. I feel perfectly padded already and anyway, I would be totally overheated with a body pillow (already sleep with no covers & a fan going). The pillow-between-legs would just stop me from switching sides.

What concept am I missing here?

  • 23 wks pregnant, same weight... why does my back hurt?

Hi all. Don't worry, I'll ask my doctor about this when I get there, but I'm annoyed so I'm posting here anyway.

I weigh the same as I did when I conceived, but my back really hurts this week. I haven't done any weird lifting or twisting AFAIK. Is it just my shifting center of gravity? I'm showing some now, but not so much that I _feel_ off-balance...

  • Do you have advice for exclusively bottle feeding using breast milk?

Hello, we're having a baby in spring. I won't be nursing directly (please don't get into trying to convince me otherwise; I would if I could, I can't) And anyway, I'll need to go back to work sooner or later.

Of course I still want my baby to have breast milk, so I plan to pump and store milk so my husband / parents can feed the kid whenever I'm not around.

Do you have any special advice for this approach? Shall I just follow the usual breast pumping instructions + the usual bottle feeding instructions, or is there something different about feeding breast milk exclusively through bottles?

(I hear formula can be more concentrated, for example, so amounts might differ...)

  • So in Tolkien's stories, why ARE the elves going "into the West"? ?

I've read Lord of the Rings and bits of the Silmarillion, but I am also lazy with a bad memory. :) So I'm hoping someone can explain to me why the elves are leaving Middle Earth and what happens to them after that.

I remember reading somewhere about how the elves are returning to their kind after a long rift of separation or... something... I don't know, anyway, I figured I'd ask. :D

  • What's wrong with my jade plant? Crackly white on leaves.?

Several jade plants at our office have a weird sort of flaky white film on the leaves. It has cracks in it... not sure if the cracks are the film, or the leaves themselves.

We don't think it's mildew since the office is extremely dry, and it's more like mica flakes than white powder.

They probably don't get enough light, but could that be the cause?

  • Employer taking out health insurance premiums, but no coverage yet -- legal?

My friend's employer swapped them to a new health insurance plan and has already started charging them the premiums even though there's no coverage yet. Some kind of "paperwork problems." He's about to get charged for the second nonexistent month of coverage. So that's $600 in the hole in return for... nothing.

Is there any way this could possibly be legal?

Of course he's already planning to talk to the local Labor department if he doesn't get a refund, but I thought I'd toss it out here too.

  • Regular period for first few months of pregnancy -- how?

I have always wondered how this was possible. My friend had her period for the first four months of her pregnancy -- not just breakthrough bleeding, but the full week-long period, right on time. She tested pregnant the whole time, the baby was there on ultrasound, etc...

Five months after it stopped she delivered a healthy full-term baby. Her doctor told her it's rare, but possible.

I just can't figure out how that would be possible! Any guesses?
