Help me understand the concept of "acceptance" in the Zen sense?

I always hear the phrase "A zen-like acceptance" and I'm trying to understand how that differs from apathy or giving up on making changes. From what I've read the real "Zen" interpretation is that acceptance involves taking responsibility for either leaving the situation the way it is, or changing it... Is that a generally understood definition? I'd like to understand this concept more, so any interpretations, links, or advice very welcome!

It's simply stoicism. (Check out the teachings of Seneca.)

You do what you can to solve a problem, then simply accept the outcome.

I believe that most unhappiness in the west, and especially in the USA, is because people are constantly being told that they DESERVE to be happy and that they should always think positively. Then when things then go wrong people get depressed.

If you are realistic, and accept that you will always have some suffering in your life, then suddenly you feel far more at ease.
