I would like to buy a 1999 Jeep Cherokee with 103k miles. Should I expect problems with the car? Are they reliable?

what engine. both the 6 and the 8s are good. we had a 95 grand cherokee 4.0 6 cylinder. we sold it with 190,000miles on it and never had any major problems. today it has 203,000miles on it the only thing the guy has done to it was a new battery. we also had a 01 grand cherokee with the 4.7 8 cylinder we sold it with 130,000miles and we never had any problems with it. we now have 3 04 grand cherokees and we love them. i hear that people that have jeeps hate them because they break down alot but it must just be how they take care of them. we have always done our own work on our jeeps(fluidchanges, brakes, starters, alternators, water pumps, bearings, shocks, ect) i will never let a dealer touch my vehicles. as long as you do the regular maintenance you will be fine. also try to find one that has maintenance records.

I had a 2000 4.0L Cherokee Sport. Leased brand new and then I purchased it from leasing company. Had to replace the radiator after I hit a deer. Replaced the alternator after my husband took it offroad and drove through 4 feet of water. That's pretty much it, aside from the usual wear and tear items that need to be replaced - brakes, tires, etc.
Vehicle was my daily driver - I commute 75 miles a day to work - until it blew a rod at 247K miles. I now own a '02 Grand Cherokee Laredo.
As with any vehicle, you need to maintain them. As long as you do the recommended services, you'll usually be ok. Jeeps are great vehicles. They're tough - you can beat the hell out of them and they just come back for more like a dog playing fetch. You'll never get stuck in mud or snow. It's got a little bit of a trucky ride, but it's not made to be a luxury SUV.
The inline 4.0L is one of the best engines that Chrysler ever made, and it's very reliable.
Go to this website and see how many recalls were ever issued for this vehicle and you can get some idea what kind of problems this Jeep had:

I like the Cherokee Jeeps, they have a high resale value so expect to pay a fair amount for a used one, especially if it's a four wheel drive. My brother's girlfriend has one, I think it's 19 years old with over 100,000 miles and runs good. If it's had regular oil changes it should be ok, one thing you can do is pull the oil dip stick and look to see if the oil looks clean. Also open the oil filler cap and look inside and see inside the engine does it look clean? These vehicles are built to last and I think they will run longer than the average car.

I have done a lot of research on these and 99 seems like a good year. I do not own one yet, but I will in about a month, I would not hesitate on a 99 with 103 on it. To the other posters that say it is junk I would say they have not looked into them because for a Good used SUV over 100,000 Jeeps get High praises every where I look. I cant wait to be part of the Jeep Family

Reliability all depends on how well the vehicle has been taken care of such as all maintenance i.e. oil/filter changes, tune-ups, and issues taken care of as soon as they arise or if the previous owner neglected the vehicle.
I have a 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee LTD 4WD 4.0L Straight 6 engine and I'm about to hit 197,000 miles with it. Very few problems other than oil/filter changes every 3,000 miles, transmission fluid changes every 55,000 miles, and normal wear and tear items, such as belts and hoses.
I also do a lot of offroading with my Jeep, and with the very few problems I've had with it, its been a great vehicle, and still continues to be.

They keep on going over 200,000 miles but after 100,000 most suspension parts start needing to be replaced. Some parts have probably been replaced already. Take it for a test drive and check for a rear wheel barring noise. They are known for rear axle seal leaks and bad rear axle barrings. It's good to change the spark plugs every 30,000 miles.

I have a '91 Jeep Grand Cherokee limited with a straight six under the hood. 220,000 miles and runs like a top. I can't kill the damn thing!

I have a 96 Sport 4.0L HO with 152,000 and haven't had any major problems.Just usual maintenance like battery,regular oil changes,water pump,and starter.
Runs like a champ and goes through the snow without any effort.
