this anime, i would say, is for an acquired taste. Psychological and Mecha. It is a mature anime ( the subject manor. )
Shinji has A LOT of problems (he feels bad for himself all the time) and Asuka is a bossy know it all (kind of bitchy). but there are plenty of other characters that balance the characteristics of the two. There is good character developement and over time, the anime makes you care about the story.

It is, and Shinji isn't gay. He's corrupted at his early age. Yes, Asuka's a f*ckin' slut and I hate her.
The anime is great. Very psychological, but there's blood and gore.
