Is there any ways to prevent Global Warming? Can we save the earth by some of the measures we can take?

I'm Angeli from Australia Melbourne.I'm really worried about the earth and my future because i'm just 15 years and there is lot i must achieve and not only me many kids and teens and everyone has some goals to achieve, but because of the human activities and dangerous events taking place i am afraid that many people cannot reach their destiny. And the unlined i ask everyone who just wishes to answer question please take interest of this very big problem and find some things that u can do to prevent it and also discuss this with u r friends and tell them also to take interest of this big problem that is going to strike everyone indent show any interest in preventing it.I hope everyone will think about it not if for me but at least for u r kids and their kids and if it should carry on.

Angeli we are in thee same boat. Hi i'm Nathan from houston Texas and im 11 years. I hate global warming its really our grandparents fault because they didn't believe scientist when they said thee Earth was heating up and if we didn't do some future generations will have a harder time.we can do so much. We can recycle. Did you know every year plastics take up 60% of all landfills. If we recycle those there can be a 20% drop at the least. We can use Rechargeable batteries. did you know that batteries take up 2.5% of all landfills. recycle anything that can be recycled; papers, plastics, and aluminum our life will be easier. During the day if you are in a room with windows and light is coming in from the outside then don't turn on the lights. When you are going out and you are going a short distance walk instead of drive if you are going in the city and not out of town take public transportation instead of private transportation unless there is a good reason not to. Also just try to get your parents and whole family to change to wind or solar or hydroelectric energy

    Stop global warming.

I have to disagree with Smilelts. Not every scientist agrees this is human caused. Often it's the media who will air only the pro-human-caused voices of science. This is what the media does. They feed off the alarmist aspect of human nature. But there are just as many professionals that disagree. The Earth has gone through many climate changes in the past. It appears that the normal climate is quite tropical, and was for some 300 million years. To the extent that there are palm and fern fossils found in Antarctica. The alarm that we are loosing the ice at the North Pole has quieted some this past winter, because the ice sheet was normal this time. The media doesn't want to talk about that. Many of the west Canadian glaciers that were mapped in the 1850s were either gone or nearly gone by 1900. Again, this information is out there. It just takes a bit more effort to find.

It has taken the combined efforts of most of the human race to get us to this point over a hundred years probably longer as we tend to sell our ancient relatives short the Roman were nearly as good as us at tearing down entire forests or the British Empire (it took 10,000 trees to build one wooden ManOwar ship in the 16th century)

For the moment most of the sea rise we have had (~6in) 15cm has been caused by thermal expansion of the worlds seas, that is the water has warmed and expanded, compared to the depth of the oceans this is less than a layer of glad wrap (saran wrap) on an olympic swimming pool. If we stopped using all cars and coal tomorrow it might help be we aren't going to do that, if we reduce our use of these things over the next 20-25 years it will certainly reduce the problem significantly. Regardless of the current lull in oil prices we were going to have to find something else over that sort of time anyway as oil is a finite thing, as, in spite of the fiction some here like to try and push that oil will last forever, new oil finds have been falling steadily over the last 20 years and our consumption has only increased, 25% of all the petrol ever used was used in just the last 10 years, that is how fast we are going through the oil that is left.

As the three main man made causes of c02 are automobiles, energy production and livestock reducing all three is something we will have to do.

To do this will require some changes in lifestyle but it doesn't, as some childishly claim, that we will have to start living like the old west or Native Americans. I would not mind betting that those predicting, we should never give up the car are descended from those a century ago that said the car was dangerous and would explode and would never replace the horse, early cars even had to have a man with a red flag walk in front.

Good to see a fellow Australian taking an interest in saving the world. There are many things that you can do to help the environment both for yourself and for society. Energy consumption is one of the biggest problems for Australia next to water shortage. Carbon emissions are also a world wide problem. In line with the energy problem we produce much of our energy from coal fired power plants which causes pollution. Water shortage is often because people waste and major industry still uses it for cleaning. Carbon emissions are a problem because people drive cars all the time and don't use public transport (or their feet). But there are many ways to combat this there are many companies that are involved with planting trees whenever they sell something SaveEnergyAustralia for instance. There are also many environmental groups within Australia which are quite good; the Australian Conservation Foundation, The Wilderness Society even sometimes greenpeace. Also you can take university degrees in environmental science and study deep ecology if you like. This is an important issue so learn as much as you can and spread it around. get involoved its no good being worried and then not doing anything, the time to act is indeed now so that there will be a future.

    Hi Angeli

No we can't prevent Global Warming, as we've already warmed it. But we CAN limit the extent that it warms from here.

It won't be easy, especially as there is a very strong denial and delaying network operating to try to convince people not to try. You can see them at work here in Yahoo Answers.

But what we do need to do is a number of things.

We need to greatly increase energy efficiency of our homes, industry and transport. We KNOW we can do this and that it is in fact a cost

    benefit.

We need switch our electricity generation from coal as soon as possible. In the short term this can be done with natural gas and even nuclear, but eventually needs to be in a suite of renewables that are made up of wind, solar, geothermal, hydro, wave/tide, and biomass.

The hardest thing will be generating the polictical support needed to make these changes, so the most important thing we as individuals can do is to have a voice and be involved in supporting the campaigns to do just that. So go to rallies, sign petitions, join climate groups, vote for politicians who want to make the changes needed, and also do the personal changes needed like using less energy, reduce/reuse/recycling, etc.

If all goes well we may limit warming to be only two or three times we have today. With the extreme weather we're already experiencing that's bad enough. But without trying we're playing russian roulette with our future with six bullets.

The earth doesn't need saving, it has been both much hotter and much colder than it is now without being in any danger.

Our climate is a dynamic process, and as such, is always in a state of change, regardless of human activity.

Using our resources wisely and cleaning up after ourselves are good thing in themselves, but they won't make a scrap of difference to global temperatures.

During the the 20th century the human population quadrupled from 1.5 billion to 6.0 billion and they has been an additional 800 million people so far in the 21st century, and is expanding at an ever increasing rate.

For all these people to be housed clothed and fed, provided with water energy transport and employment, and at the same time reduce our effect on the environment, just doesn't add up.

so the most important thing to do, is to campaign for population controls, without this , everything else would be a waste of time.

The problem is not liberal, conservative or libertarian, the problem is the concept of strong man control rather than the rule of law. When the law can be twisted and worked to make one group stronger and another group weaker there is a problem with the law. Our founding fathers designed a form of limited national government to get away from the different forms of strong central governments that had plagued civilization since Babylon. Central governments need an enemy to fight and conquest for loot to appease the mob. And this is the problem that has led to disaster time after time, a conquest based system always has and always will teeter on the verge of collapse. The solution is production for use with surplus traded and it would work because it has always worked when tried until a raiding conquest group came along and broke it. Always vote against politicians that are going to save the world because they always make things worse instead of better.

Yes there are plenty of ways to prevent Global Warming. By cutting down on the waste we use and not using as many factories. Global warming is caused by certain chemicals being released into the air thickening the atmosphere holding all the heat in. The chemicals are caused by factories, waste and cars. If we can cut down on these things by walking wear we can walk, recycling reducing and composting what we can and not using so much from factories it will cut down on the chemicals being released into the air.

    First of all Angeli,

I'm really sorry to see that while you're coming on here and asking a very genuine and conscientious question, half of your answerer's are spouting denial propaganda. While global warming is very well researched and agreed upon as near certain by the overwhelming majority of relevant scientists, a few very vocal and self-righteous types (mostly not scientists) take it upon themselves to tell everyone that they know better, or else claim that the scientific consensus is some sort of conspiracy. Unfortunately, forums on the internet such as here seem to be a favorite place for them to gather. Most of their arguments stem from either a complete misunderstanding of the science behind the issue, or else from the work of people funded by big corporations such as oil companies (who may stand to lose out if we cut down on our use of their products). Indeed, of the handful of "experts" in the field of global warming denial, many directly receive large amounts of funding from oil companies.

I really, truly hate to see young people like yourself being ambushed by deniers just for asking what you can do to help, so if you ever see an argument against the existence of human induced global warming that you're even half taken-in by, please send me a message and I'll do my best to explain the flaws in it.

So as for a solution, here is what I'm doing, and what I highly recommend to everyone interested in the cause. It is called Transition Towns, and it is a solution that begins where you live (Cambridge, England for me).

This is the positive, intelligent and achievable approach that we've all been waiting for. It started a few years ago in Totnes, Devon and is catching on like wild fire, spreading to cities, towns and villages across the country and indeed the world. It is already achieving much that other environmental movements have proved unsuccessful in. It creates a positive vision of the future along with a plan to get us there.

It's solutions not only help us cut our carbon emissions dramatically, but they also make our community stronger and are a lot of fun. It is also about preparing us on a community level to be resilient against the future effects of climate change and for the coming one-way decline in global oil supplies (this year it has finally been officially admitted that this oil decline is imminent, and estimated to begin roughly in the year 2020. Google "peak oil").

Me and some friends started the Cambridge Transition movement less than a year ago, and already it has over 500 members, over 50 of whom are actively working on making our vision a reality. We won an award for environmental achievement and also the support of our local council.

We were inspired by other transition towns in England, and in turn we inspire more towns. The more the movement grows, the more it grows in publicity and respect. It has already spread to other countries. The Scottish authorities have made £250,000 available in funding for transition towns in Scotland.

Anyone in the world can become part of the movement. See if there's a transition group in your town, and if there isn't you can very easily start one. Here is the official website address: http://www.transitiontowns.org./ It tells you what you need to know to get started, and the contact details of people who can help you. Together we are changing the world!

There is no credible scientific evidence that supports man-caused global warming...... I repeat.... NONE!

I'm all for not littering or polluting our water... etc. But.... this global warming thing is a hoax intended to make a small number of people very rich. Don't fall for it.... and if your teachers are pushing it.... demand that they present ALL arguments ..... pros & cons. If they won't, then demand that they get out of teaching.
