Oh NO! Newborns and babies sleep A LOT more than we do.. They slept a lot in the womb, even though it didn't feel like it. That's how they grow and develop. We had to wake ours up to eat to and she usually fell asleep eating. It was definately a process. Now at 4 1/2 months, I can barely get her down for more than a quick cat nap. Enjoy your precious little one. It goes so fast!

My daughter slept all the time until she was about 3months old I used to wake her for feeds during the day but let her sleep through the night. I gave her last feed at half 10 and she used to wake around 6 half 6. So baby should be fine sleeping alot.

The two books I've read "what to expect when you are expecting" and "the nursing mother's guidebook" state that a baby might be too sleepy to eat, so you need to wake up a sleepy baby to make sure the baby eats every 2-3 hours. It isn't healty for a newborn to sleep thru feedings, but as long as the baby is getting food, let her sleep as much as she wants. My son would fall asleep at the breast after 2seconds, so I was always trying to keep him awake to have a decent feeding. Tips in the book include taking some of her clothes off and gently wiping her face with a damp washcloth.

No, not really unless they are not feeding. A breastfed baby needs to eat every 2-3 hours. A bottle fed baby can go as long as 4 hours. This would be for babies 8 weeks old and under. I would wake the baby for a feed if under 8 weeks. After 8 weeks of age I would not wake a sleeping baby for a feed.

Newborns sleep 18-20 hours per day. That means only four hours of "open eye" time--and that's not consecutive. Ever hear the old saying, "never wake a sleeping baby?" That applies. If your baby's not losing weight and your pediatrician isn't concerned, don't wake your child to eat. If she's hungry, she'll wake herself. If she's not hungry and you keep waking her to eat, she'll begin to develop bad eating habits. Just relax and know she's doing exactly what she's supposed to do.

You will need to wake her every three hours during the DAY for feedings. At night, let her sleep as much as she wants. Newborns tend to sleep alot and we always needed to wake ours. We even needed to use cold washclothes on her feet to rouse her sometimes. Never wake a baby at night, though. It helps them to learn that night is for sleep. Our baby was sleeping through the night by 8 weeks. As long as she is gaining weight and making wet and dirty diapers, she's fine. Enjoy this time while it lasts. My baby just wants to play now and daytime naps are a fight!

I think it's normal and you're lucky but I would not go more than 4 hours without feeding. Infants don't have enough fat to sustain them for long periods. Breastfeed babies are suppose tp eat every two hours for the first 3 months. Formula feed babies every 4.

Our ped. told us NEVER WAKE A SLEEPING BABY TO EAT! And she said it just like that too...lol! She said that some babies need more sleep than others but the big concern is that during this long sleep may be the point at which your baby is transitioning to sleeping all night. At 6 days old Aubrey Jade slept for seven hours and I was sure she was in a COMA..lol. But by the time she was 5 weeks old she was sleeping all night regularly.

As long as she is eating and having the normal diaper changes, then she's fine. Newborns sleep A LOT. Just be sure she eats... sleeping for too long & acting lethargic is a sign of dehydration . so just be sure she's eating enough and wetting diapers. But honestly, she sounds like a normal newborn! Congrats. :)

Sleeping is something they are supposed to do (unfortunately, mine often does resist), however, they are supposed to want to eat, too. I'm sure there is nothing to be concerned about, but I would call in to an advice nurse or pay a visit to your doctor just to be sure. I've made several "nervous mommy" visits that, hindsight, were silly. But the copay and my embarrassment were well worth knowing she was OK.
Good luck!
