How is Bob Sheppard doing?

I was wondering how "The Voice of the Yankees" has been doing health wise. I know that he missed the entire 2008 season and what was his voice over the public announcement was all recorded. Is there any chance that he will ever be back. especially for the first game at the new stadium. Love or hate the Yankees people, this man has done this for 55 years! I find that incredible!

Update:

I want to say Thank You for the great answers! Everyone, especially on this extremely jaded popularity contest forum (not much of the original ideals here from when this site was launched- being a "True" original- I can say this) actually treated this question seriously (not once did I get a Yankees suck for an answer- maybe the juveniles choose to ignore this question- Good I say!)

I don't ask alot of questions, I don't even answer alot of question, I don't have alot of contacts, but those that I do, I feel are quality, just as all of you have demonstrated! So, again, I say THANK YOU!

Let the true love of the game shine through for 2009!

He is under contract to announce the first game at the new stadium but, or course, his health is the real issue. As you know, he wanted to come back last year and just was not able to do it. Very little is being said about his current status but, at 98 years old, I have to believe he is not doing very well. What a great moment, for all baseball fans, it would be if he is in the announcing booth for the first game in the new stadium.

I keep thinking about Derek Jeter and having Sheppard record his "at bat". Derek wanted him to be part of the very last game at the old stadium. Pretty classy!

Yankees fans or not, people have to wish this wonderful baseball personality well. A part of baseball history to be sure.

  • Last i heard he announced by recording from his home in the last game at Yankee stadium that he's going to try & be back to announce the first game at the new Stadium.

Interesting. I'm pretty sure that it's looking like that he won't be back. It's hard for anyone to go to work when they're 98 years old. I think that it's finally about time for Sheppard to go. He's lived long enough and has had a great view of a whole lot of great moments.

A rare great question for this group.

I hope he's doing well - a true part of baseball history. And I'm not even a Yankees fan.
