I work in the Testing Center for my University, and we do CLEP tests every other week, so I can definitely help here ;)
CLEP stands for College Level Exam of Proficiency. A CLEP test is a test that you can elect to take in order to receive college credit for classes. For instance, say you took three years of Spanish in High School, but you need two semesters in college, you could take a CLEP test using your previous knowledge to receive the credit without having to take the classes.
CLEP tests are NEVER required for any degree, they are simply a way to receive your degree faster if you have the knowledge to take and pass the test. So no, you do not need it for your degree.
I'm sure the only reason the question about CLEP is on the application is to ascertain which students will be entering the nursing program with pre-existing credits.
You do NOT need to take the test unless your degree requires a class that you think you know enough about to take the test.
Hope that I helped, best of luck with your nursing degree!
