deliberately missing a free throw = cheating?

I'm sure I have seen at least one NBA game where, rather than make the second of two free throws, the shooter deliberately misses, hoping that a teammate will get the rebound. I vaguely feel as though that might be, in principle, cheating. What do you think?

It may feel that way a bit however there is no rule that prohibits it. It is simply a tactic which most any team would use to try to win the game.

How could you consider that as cheating? If your team was down by 3 with seconds left and you had 2 free throws and you made them both, it is most likely it would result in a loss, by missing the free throw you are taking a chance because you have to get the rebound, if it was considered cheating then the opposing team would always score off this and this is not the case because I have seen many games on TV where teams have done this and failed.

Not necessarily. Isn't more of an offence to foul the player and stop him from him scoring from open play? If player gets two free throws, he deserves to get maximum points from it. Besides, if it's not against the NBA rules, it would not be considered 'cheating'.

I see your point about the spirit of the game, but it is not illegal. Cheating is trying to get away with something illegal.

Similarly, I coached a girl years ago who refused to go into the game to commit a foul. She found it outside the spirit of the game and spirit of the rules. As a coach and fan, I see either your situation or mine as strategy. We choose to accept the consequence of the action and go for the risk

No. There is no rule stating you have to make your free throws, it's optional. You are trying to win games, so whatever you need to do within the rules is ok.

no it is a good strategy

plus it is up to the other teams box out defense to ensure someone doesnt get the rebound

its like fouling on a fast break with a foul to give
