car does a clicking sound in engine area?

2000 Mitsubishi Eclipse is doing a clicking sound when i start up my car in the morning. The noise is coming from the engine area. It started happening when the temperature got cold. But once the car warms up the clicking noise goes away. What could be wrong?

Update:

Current maintenance on it: New plugs and wires, distributor cap and rotor, battery, engine mounts, oil change is current.

Update 2:

The sound seems to be coming from under the upper exhaust manifold.

Update 3:

when i start the car it does the clicking and also sounds loud starting up(1500rpm) until it warms up and drops to 600rpm

It sounds like you may have a defective exhaust manifold gasket, or possibly some loose exhaust manifold bolts. When the clicking goes away with a warm engine, the heat causes expansion of exhaust manifold which closes off the exhaust leak. A bad hydraulic valve lifter can also make a clicking noise, but it will not quiet down as the engine oil temperature reaches operating temperature. Best to replace the exhaust manifold gasket(s) and exhaust manifold bolts.

If the noise sounds like a typewriter then it is probably a cam follower or valve lifter. These are hydraulic and when they get worn can have excessive clearance or get stuck when sludged. It then takes time for oil pressure to fill in the gaps and push them up against the valves. The noise is from the excessive clearance as the lifter 'slaps' the valve. Once oil pressure pushes it up against the valve they stay in constant contact so the 'slapping' noise goes away. The lifters may need to be changed but in some cases running a thicker oil will eliminate the noise until you can get the work done. It's always a good idea to get a skilled technician to diagnose unusual noises as those noises are your car's way of telling you something is wrong.

Or you can just turn the radio up so you can't hear the noise but that will only work until the car finally breaks down. Good luck.

  • Sticky lifter? That's what my son told me about my cars similar symptoms.

mine does this and i had new starter put in,new egnition switch and now am told its the ecu unit. Clicking noises can be something minor or somehing big its hard to say until you have had it in a garage.
