Do you feel Tony Dungy is overrated?

The media has treated him with kid gloves for years. Is he really that good or just lucky to have good talent on the field?

Abso-friggin'-lutely! The teams in Tampa Bay were solid, but were playoff duds. It took Jon Gruden coming in there to win in the playoffs and win the Super Bowl.

In Indianapolis, the Colts have won one superbowl, not b/c of him, but in spite of him. How many years did the Colts start out 8-0, 9-1, only to flounder in the playoffs? after the colts clinched early, dungy would let his team take the rest of the season off. then the colts would be upset in the playoffs by hot, hungry teams. contrast this with what tom Coughlin did last year with the giants in the last game against the patriots- he played to win, even though the game was meaningless in terms of the giants seed in the playoffs. I'm certain that if Bill Parcells coached these Colts over Peyton Manning's career, they definitely would've won at least 2 Superbowls instead of 1.

Dungy is adored by the media partly b/c he's black. the media loves a story like this b/c it absolves us all of white guilt (kind of similar to Obama in that respect) by having the successful black coach. also, his son dying a few years ago at the end of the season gave him even more sympathy in the media. also, he's humble, soft spoken, and friendly, so it's harder to dislike him than an obnoxious coach like belicheck. Dungy is a decent, solid coach, but nothing great.

    Source(s): my eyes. common sense.

Tony Dungy is a great coach....

He built the winner that Tampa Bay once was and still has a great amount of respect from the players he coached in Tampa....I thought it was kind of sickening at the time when Gruden won the Super Bowl with Dungy's players and playbook essentially....

Dungy was given a ready made offensive squad in Indy, but give him credit he builds his teams on defensive principles which were something the Colts have always struggled with, yet and still Dungy does a great job of masking the defensive shortcomings of the Colts with various schemes

Gruden won Dungy's Superbowl in Tampa Bay against Gruden's former team in Oakland. If anything Gruden is over rated. To be honest I think Dungy gets the respect he deserves and considering how much Tampa Bay crashed after winning that Superbowl I would say that part of it is also the coaching, and not just the talent. If Tampa Bay had been great after Dungy left for a few years we'd say well they had a high talent level and Gruden took advantage of it, but it would also say that Dungy had left a high talent level and say was he that good.

He has taken his team to the playoffs 10 seasons in a row (3 with the Bucs and 7 with the Colts). No other NFL coach has ever done that. How could he be over rated? Yes he has a lot of talent on his team but that does not diminish that fact. I would not call him one of the 5 or maybe even 10 best coaches in the history of the NFL -- but he is one of the top 5 coaches of at least the past 10 years based on his playoff record alone.

Im not a fan of the Colts at all but as a Bucs fan I can honestly say he was a great coach in Tampa and he continued winning with the colts. I have alot of respect for Dungy.

its hard to say he was good when he was on tampa to but i do believe manning makes dungy what he is. he got the keys to the castle indy already had manning edgerrin james wayne and harrison even before dungy was there.

he hasnt thrown 49td passes in a season. he hasnt had 9 seasons of 4000 yds

no. don't you remember tampa? he's the one that finally brought the talent there.

but you have a point. most head coaches who won the superbowl are overrated.
