I got a cast iron skillet/grill for christmas? HELP PLEASE?

It says its preseasoned and to just wipe it down with hot water and spray with vegetable oil. It fits over 2 burners. I want to make pancakes on it. How hot should I set my burners? Do I have to put anything else on it? wil it be NONStick?

Your cast iron skillet will be the best skillet you will ever own. Use it the same as any other skillet - you'll know if the heat is too high.

After we use ours, my husband washes it, coats it with oil, heats it in the oven to cure it before we put it away.

This will preserve your "seasoned" pan.

Cast Iron is not nonstick--you will need to use the vegetable oil spray or butter, or something like that to keep food from sticking to it.

Though your skillet says it is pre-seasoned--they really only get seasoned with use--they only improve with age. But you will find foods will stick to it and need a good scrubbing to get them off.

With something like pancakes you should be fine so long as you don't try to flip them too early. You may need to experiment with the heat setting on your stove to get it just right.

I don't think cast iron is non-stick, you may have to put some butter on it to make pancakes, set the burners to medium to high just watch it, if too hot turn down, cast iron also makes a good weapon off defense if some one should break in you just clunk him on the head with it, handy pan.

No, cast iron is not non-stick. You'll need to use butter or cooking spray for your pancakes. I'd start with a medium high heat and try one pancake with that then adjust accordingly.

no isn't non-stick yet. with years of use it will be. but i still take a brush and wipe oil onto it before i cook. i take it you have an electric stove. set the heat for medium. pour a spoonful of batter onto the grill and adjust heat accordingly. go to the dutch oven sites if you have anymore questions. they are a good source of information.

Source(s): experience i belong to a dutch oven group and teach cast iron cooking
