new york city trip for graduation present?

taking my best friends daughter and my son to NYC for her graduation.

She will be 18 and he will be 17.

We're trying to make it to as many of the sites as possible but are there some things that maybe they would really be into that we're not thinking of. Meaning something besides the typical NY fare.

She keeps wanting to go to "the village" not sure what is meant by this and what would we do in the village. What about some of the other areas like canal street, SOHO, the meat packing area.

this trip is for the kids so things that would be interesting to them would be good. We already have planed the statue of liberty, wall street, WTC Memorial area, macy's, rocefeller center, times sqare, Grand Central Station, The library, United Nations, and of course FAO Schwartz and some shopping is definitely in line.

Not sure what museums they would like?

Any tips and info would be most appreciated. Also going to be getting a book so that we know we don't miss what we really want to see. Any recommendations on a good one?????

We're probably staying a the Holiday Inn Midtown and taking about $1200 for me and my son.

Thanks again

you should definitely consider the Metropolitan Museum of Art (MET) and the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA). I don't know how long you're staying in NY, but you should plan out your time carefully because you can literally spend more than 1 day at the MET.. it's a really big museum. You should check both of their websites and see what exhibits they have now if you're planning to go to one of them. If they're more into historical and worldly art I suggest going to the MET. The MOMA has modern art but it's very interesting (video art, visual, etc.) I think both are great but it depends on what your son's in to.

when your best friends' daughter says "the village" she's probably referring to Greenwich Village.. you can go to their website to see what you can do [http://www.nycgv.com/]

i suggest you go to times square at night. in my opinion you really get to see it come alive at night with all the lights and it's just a great atmosphere. also apparently they're leaving the new year's ball for everyone to see all year round so keep a lookout for that :)

another suggestion is to go to south street seaport. it's pretty nice there and there is also a mall located there.

You should definitely go to SoHo. There are cobble-stone streets and the stores there are really nice. It's kind of a more expensive area but it's nice to even just stroll around there. Canal street's good if you want to get cheaper things. Around there are a lot of small shops and markets where you can bargain or find things at a low price.

Anyway, hope that all helped :) I think you'll have a lot of fun considering that you're going to all the really great places. You can probably do a google search too and see what other places are good.

The Toys R' Us is actually fun for all ages, give it a shot. Museum of natural history is good but for that you have to take basically an entire day and devote it just to that. Maybe you'd want to go see a broadway show? Avenue Q perhaps..? Simply walking around Times Square is fun and just exploring and going in the different stores you see. There's the MTV store(not much but a quick stop to make if you'd like). As far as food some of my favorite's would be Ruby Foos, Virgil's, Elaine's Stardust Diner, Jekyll & Hyde, and there's tons of others. Hope this somewhat helped. I'm sure you'll have fun no matter what. Good Luck =)

This is much better than any book - it is a narrated guide to the best 300_ web sites about New York City, and it describes all of the city's neighborhood, shopping districts, museums, nightlife, sports, hotels, restaurants, etc. It has an excellent table of contents so you can quickly find what you are looking for. It is the best place to start your research about New York City.
