unless he is an expert photographer, more camera than he will probably ever use...a very good camera. Several newer Nikon lenses will fit this camera, so he will not run out of options soon. The 10.2 megapixel is a lot of detail...he will not be disappointed, for sure. That is a lot of birthday present!

Your question is not descriptive enough.

What is the name or model of the camera?

    Something like:

    Nikon D70

    Nikon D80

    Nikon D90

I would highly suggest the Nikon D90 with 18-200 VR lens.

If that is too constraining on the budget, please look at the Nikon D40 or the Canon XTi.

Edit - added after question was edited to say that the D60 is being evaluated for purchase:

I would look at D40 over D60 because the D40 is much cheaper. Both D40 and D60 do not include internal auto-focus motors, so you will have to buy more expensive lenses to gain auto-focus capability.

If you go for a D90 (or less recommended a D80) it has an internal auto-focus motor and can be used with a wider variety of Nikon lenses.

The D60 does not present many advantages over D40.

I would look at D40 + 18-55 lens + 55-200 VR lens. Get it for the same price as the D60 with just the 18-55.

Main difference is 6.1 MP versus 10.2 MP. This doesn't matter unless you plan to make very large prints (larger than a piece of paper). If you do plan to make prints 11"x17" or larger, then go for the D90 or the Canon XSi.

    Good luck!
