Is "gigs of site transfer" the same thing as "bandwidth"? ?

I am trying to choose a host for my website.

sort of. Gigabytes of data are like the cars on the road and Bandwidth is like the width of the road with lots of lanes on it - the wider the road and the more lanes you have the more data you can fit down the road or cable connection.

How much traffic you expect to your site will determine the bandwidth that you require and how much you will need to pay for that bandwidth.

Not really. Bandwidth refers to transfer rate while what you described is transfer size. Most hosts operate based on the amount of data transfered.
