You may need to update a driver for the CD Drive. Go to the manufacturer web site and download their latest driver for your version of your operating system. This is especially needed if you have recently installed Windows XP SP3, Vista SP1, or iTunes 8. iTunes is notorious for messing up CD Drives with its software, especially in Vista PCs.

Try going into device manager and removing the device. Then reboot and see if your system recognizes it and installs the drivers again.
