Raising a family in the Seychelles...?

My boyfriend and I are thinking of moving there. He has his skipper's license so we'll be living the dream of taking tourists on yachts etc. But what happens in a couple of yrs when we "get serious about life" and start a family?

Sorry, I've never been there, so was wondering if there are GOOD schools in the Seychelles. What kind of lifestyle could you offer your children in terms of opportunities for education, sport,...?

Well, if you want my opinion. I'm a 14 year old and I live in Seychelles.I go to public school and the educational system is pretty good here compared to other countries in this part of the world. We also have private schools which also provide good educational opportunities for kids.

There's lots of activities available here for the youth ; the seychelles are not as lost in time as it is often portrayed. We have movies, malls, sport complexes, recreational centers and all that .

We are right now going through some economical difficulties; you should expect everything in the shops to be expensive when you move in.

But apart from that the Seychelles is a very pleasant place to live in. We don't have major natual disasters such as hurricanes, earthquakes and volcanic eruption.(but I guess that the person above has given enough imfo about the weather;so I will not elaborate)

Hope to see you here one day :0)

Hi, I'm a seychelloise from seychelles. There are 3 private schools, ecole francis (french school), independent school (private school for us locals) and international school (pretty much kids from around the world go here). Our schooling system is better than some countries, but private or public makes no difference here.

Oh to what someone said about cyclones/hurricanes, no such thing. Here in seychelles we've never had one. We have monsoon season which is now. Just high rough seas, some wind and lots of rain. Yes, we were mildly hit by the tsunami, 2 people were killed. 1 was hit by a boat on shore after the initial wave (by the way, wasn't a wave here for us, more a strong surge) and the other killed the day after, he drowned.

Our children aren't bored, yes we don't have "malls" and so on. But our kids get deeply into their sports and other activities. Yes, we have the beaches, boats, oh we have 1 cinema in the main city victoria, and another at docklands "mall". Its not the boringest place on earth. If you grow up a close net family and close friends, there isn't anything wrong. We've got places kids go to play console games, net cafes, kids club. etc etc. When its time to go to uni, the seychelles government pays for your child to go to australia, india or new zealand to study, they pay for their apartment, and give them an allowance and also they are given 2 return tickets a year to come home for visits. We are under the british curriculum.

Sports, well my husband is a gymnast, he has represented seychelles, poland and belgium. You do well in sports here and they send you to camps over seas.

Now we don't have all the best techy stuff, but it can be imported.

The medical system is not the greatest, but they compensate, if your too ill, the government will send you most likely to singapore and will pay for someone to go with you.

So no, we aren't a thriving city, but we are an tropical island escape away from the busy busy hustle and bustle.

i met some kids recently who lived on the seychelles. they went to a good private school. i think their parents were diplomats/ambassodors because i remember them saying there were mostly foreigners in their school. so education is available, although it might be pricey.

but those kids were very emphatic about the fact that seychlles was the most boring place on earth to live in. there was just the beach for entertainment. no malls, cafes etc-only the star class hotels and just a single cinema.

to be frank, your kids will not have the best education there nor the opportunities available in a more developed or even simply bigger country. that said, satisfactory/good schools are available and your family is most likely to be more close knit and you children will grow up away from the all the bad things that go on in more developed places. but it will be just you and your family there...you must be prepared for some solitude and monotony.
