Idle Thought Poll: Do home schooled kids ever get snow days?

Snow days are one of the greatest things about school, but do home schooled kids ever get this pleasure?

Thanks for adding to my poll's sampling.

Rolling my eyes at all of the ignorant home school remarks.

My step son is home schooled. He knows the pleasure of a snow day. :-)

We never had snow days. It didn't matter how bad the weather was, school went on as usual. Some of our buses had built in sand reservoirs with dumps in front of the back tires so the driver could scatter sand for traction if need be. Those were the buses that went way out in the country to pick up those kids who lived many miles out in the sticks. Sometimes they were an hour or two late for school, and sometimes the bus would slide off the road and another would need to be dispatched to retrieve the kids but they always made it. Better late than never is how everybody felt about it. I remember one year we had an unexpected cold snap when the temperature dipped down to 20 below. That was the days before any kind of engine heater, and nobody could get their cars started. My father built a fire in a big scoop shovel, and when it burned down to coals he shoved it under the oil pan of an old car he'd covered the whole front end of with tarps and quilts clear to the ground. It warmed up the oil in the pan so the engine would turn over, and once he got it started, went around the neighborhood jump starting everyone else. Everybody else followed suit as their cars got started and pretty soon the whole town was going. That was all done early in the morning, and by the time it was time for everybody to be at work and school, the town was going. As the school buses made their rounds they jump started alot of the people in the out lying areas. Nobody would ever dream of calling off a day because of weather back then. My dad learned that from growing up in Wyoming where it was always frigid in winter.

Probably more so than public school kids! My kids never get snow days - it could snow 2 ft - those buses just keep on comin.

  • I just finished my books in two days and waited another 2 months for the next batch to come so.. I had months of breaks

The ones I knew did -- they went skiing or sledding or shoveled snow and called it GYM class, so they could have credit.

LOL ! I have no clue sweetie but those 3 kids that I know of who are "home schooled" are "socially inept" unfortunately.

No, but they always make first team in all the sports.

Of course not, they're already home and do not need to travel. It's not like they have any friends anyway.
