Who do you think was the best pound for pound boxer of all time?
For me, it was Julio Caesar Chavez, who had the perfect combination of speed, power, and stamina. I also give a close nod to Rocky Marciano.
Why is Rocky Marciano never added on to this list? I know fundamentally speaking, he was not the greatest, but, he had an iron jaw that no one could break, even guys like joe louis.
British Bob Fitzsimmons? Awesome idea. I think Jeffries and Johnson were better fighters of that era, but I see what you mean.

Good question! The lazy answer is Suger Ray but the Boxing Hall of Fame as well as most boxing historians consider Bob Fitzsimmons (link below).
Fitzsimmons is rated among the greatest fighters who ever lived and one of the hardest hitters; He held three World Championships during his career - Middleweight, Heavyweight, and Light Heavyweight.
He is considered by many to be the deadliest hitter of all time.
Julio Caesar Chavez and Rocky are up there-no doubt but this man gets my vote all day long!

chavez is up there with the best of them, and is arguably the greatest fighter ever to come out of south america (although cases can be made for carlos monzon, salvador sanchez, eder jofre & alexis arguello).
most experts and fans pick sugar ray robinson as the greatest of all time, winning the welterweight title, the middleweight title 5 (almost 6) times, and heat exaustion prevented him from almost winning the light heavy title as well.
he could punch equally hard with both hands, and almost unmatched hand speed, excellent footwork, he could dance, bob & weave, knock and opponent out while moving backward, stamina and an excellent chin.............he even drew crowds just to watch him skip rope!
even muhammad ali calls robinson the greatest, but chavez would be in the top 20.

Seeing many of these answers and having answered this question many times reminds me of what Budini Brown always chanted to Muhammad Ali: Fight like Sugar Ray. Sugar Ray Robinson was and always will be the greatest boxer ever.

The time-honored answer to this question has always been Sugar Ray Robinson. . . uttered oftentimes by people who have NEVER even watched one of his fights! (And I'm NOT referring to Blogbaba or Maurice) These others I'm referring to say it to sound like a "student of the game". . . and I admit, earlier in my youth, I'd have been likely to say Robinson, as well. But, with all greats, their greatness will always be challenged. . . .
Floyd Mayweather Jr. has fought all comers, in several weight classes, and beaten them all. Only Castillo and Oscar even came CLOSE to beating him. The list of Floyd's conquests are so numerous, I won't bother typing them, since we all know them.
True, Robinson fought many, many more times than Floyd, and fought much more often, but his Robinson's opposition wasn't ALWAYS top-notch. . . for every Basilio, Saxton, DeMarco, or Fullmer, there were lots of Mick Leahy's, Jackie Cailleau's, and Bobby Lee's. . . . once Floyd got gold around his waist, he fought only top-ten guys. . . look it up if you don't believe me. (I'll spot you Emmanuel Augustus, although Micky Ward told me that Augustus was the toughest fighter he ever fought. . . not Gatti)
I'll never get Bert Sugar to admit it, but the "old guard" is starting to see Floyd's greatness for what it is (was). . . . probably the single most impressive career in the history of the sport.
Having said that. . . I'm NOT a Floyd fan. I think he's everything that is (was) wrong with the sport. The gangsta-money-gold teeth-money-gold chain-money lifestyle as Floyd portrays it is completely and totally NEGATIVE. Am I jealous of his money? Of course I am, like every other American ever born. But if I had his money, I sure would spend it on more intelligent items than he does.
Bottom line, whether I like the man or not doesn't change the fact that his numbers speak louder than opinions. Yours, mine, or anyone else's. And if Floyd comes out of retirement to fight Pacquiao, there goes Floyd's "0". . . .

willie pep is not arguably the best ever he is the best his record is 229 wins 11 losses and i believe 65 knockouts1draw but the reason for so few knockouts is because his defense was unrivaled by anyone to ever fight no question tho it could be the competition he fought but his record is amazing and so were his fights he gets my vote over anyone

Just to be different. Henry Armstrong. Featherweight, Lightweight, and Welterweight champion all in one year. And this was when there was just 8 belts to go around.
