    CRATE TRAIN!!!

1st of all you need a crate and one that has a training divider so that your new puppy dos not potty in one side and sleep in the other. Or if you can not find one with the divider you can get a small one and buy a larger one later. Craiglist.org is a good place to get a used one for cheep! under PETS!!!

What kind of Dog? . What were the sizes of the parents ? That should help you determine the est size of your puppy.

My mom has a Black lab (who is very large) as well as my GSD and they both have the 42'' crate. But most of the time a 36" will do for a large dog. They need room to stand up turn around and lay down and that is about it!

PUPPY PADS ONLY TEACH A DOG TO ELIMINATE IN THE HOUSE!!! THEY MAKE HOUSE TRAINING MUCH HARDER!!!!

Vicktoia Sitlwells book "It's Me or the Dog: How to Have the Perfect Pet" Book is a great resource! Cesar Milan's techniques are very dangerous even for the most experienced dog trainers! Start socializing y our puppy young! Puppy classes are great and you will have a great puppy on your hands!

    Recommendations for House-Training

After the puppy has been confined in a crate 2 to 3 hours (4 to 6 hours for adults):

    1. In a quiet, up-beat manner, take him on leash to the bathrooming area.

    2. Choose a bathrooming phrase you are comfortable with, such as “Go potty” or “Hurry up,” and say the phrase a few times. Keep this as low-key as possible. If the dog can’t run around to investigate interesting smells, he’ll go to the bathroom out of sheer boredom.

    3. If the dog does his “business” within a maximum of 5 minutes, say, “Good (bathrooming phrase),” then play fetch, give him a treat, or let him romp around in his yard.

    4. If he doesn’t “go,” take him back to the crate for another half hour (young pup) or an hour (older pup or adult dog), then try again.

Take a few days to concentrate on housetraining. Learn the dog's bathrooming habits. Some dogs are more comfortable with shrubs or fencing to protect their privacy. Other dogs need to urinate twice each time they bathroom. A few dogs teach their owners to take long, frequent strolls around the yard or neighborhood; use the 5 minute system to prevent this.

Your Dog/puppy will quickly learn that the fun part of his day doesn't begin until after he's been a "good" dog outside. Rubbing a dog's nose in an "accident," smacking him on the rear end, or yelling at him increases housetraining problems.

Females need a bathrooming phrase or they won't relieve themselves in new territory for about 24 hours. Intact males mark everywhere, including inside buildings, for the first hour in new territory.

crate training would be the best way. When you are not at home and not ablt to watch the puppy and even at night place the puppy in the crate. Make sure that the crate is large enough to move around but not large enough to lay at one end and potty in the other, Then when you are at home the puppy needs to be walked several times a day for about 15-20 minutes for excercise, socializing and to go potty. When a dog is young their bladder is not yet strong enough to hold so hopefully someone will be there to be able to take the puppy out every 2-3 hours to potty until the puppy gets older and learns to control it's bladder better.

Many people that live in apartments have dogs. You put the dog on a leash and walk it. Pee, no problem. Poop, have a bag to pick it up. The first thing to remember about house training a puppy is there ability to hold themselves is limited. A rule of thumb is they can hold "it" usually 1 hour for each month of age. 2 months old = 2 hours, 3 months old = 3 hours, etc. When your puppy wakes up (morning, nap, whatever) the pup has to go, right then! Take the pup out. When the pup eats or drinks, it has to go, take the pup out. After exercise (play), take the pup out. When the pup does it's thing outside praise it. A lot. Tell the pup how good, how smart it is. You have to pay attention to the pups "looking for it's spot" behavior. When you see that behavior indoors, whisk the pup out. If you catch the pup in the act, simply tell it "NO!" and whisk it outside. If you find a puddle or pile after the fact, clean it up with an enzyme cleaner (pet food store) get a newspaper and hit.... yourself in the head and say "I should have been paying more attention." Daytime training they get pretty fast. Night time training is easier if you crate train the pup. Also remember the one hour/one month rule. You will have to get up through the night to take the pup out. Good luck

Take her for a walk to potty instead of letting her out back. potty pads are a bad idea because it's very hard to train a dog to go outside once she's learned she can go inside. Crate training is hard, but usually necessary. You have to learn to ignor her when she whines or howls, otherwise she'll think that's how to get your attention every time. Good luck!

I cannot figure this out either. A puppy needs to be taken OUT every hour in order to potty train it. Even a mature dog needs to urinate last thing at night and first thing in the morning. My dog goes into the garden at about 11 p.m. and about 8 a.m. I could not tell her to cross her legs until I get dressed.

Will you mum allow you to go out in the dark with your dog? Plus what will you do if it has diarrhoea either now or when it is older? I am sure that you sometimes need to urinate during the night, what happens when your dog needs to do this?.

Please ignore the people who will suggest getting a cage (prison) for a puppy. Although a dog will try not to toilet in it's cage it will get bladder and bowel problems in later life.

Do you intend to leave a little puppy who has just left it's mother and litter mates when you go to school and can you afford to pay vets bills?. Listen to your mother.

You can get a rabbit hutch, one meant for indoors. Take the wirebar top off, and purchase a length of sod or lawn, your mum should know what Sod is. Train the pup to go on that spot and that spot only. Clean it up after every #2.

I have a Shepherd. When I first got her, at three months, I would feed her, then take her out five minutes later and walk her around.

I would put a half of a biscuit in my pocket and after she did her business, I would give it to her.

    She caught on very quickly.

Do you mean train it to go in the toilet? You can't.

Dogs need to be taken outside for walks for more reasons than just eliminating waste. They need the exercise. Please don't get a puppy if you don't intend to take it outside.

Use a litter box, and anytime it goes to the bathroom anywhere besides that litter box, pick it up when it's done and put it in the box. It'll learn. Sorry about calling your dog an it, by the way.

Really easy: crate train and walk it outside on a leash.
