How long is it supposed to take for blood pressure medicine to work?
I'm 22 and went to the doctor today for my high blood pressure and was given 50 mg pills of Toprol XL. I was wondering how long it is typically supposed to take to work because my blood pressure was 170/116 at the doctors office today and I just checked it now at home and it's 138/84 after only one dose and that seems to be very not right. I've never taken anything for my blood pressure before and my doctor was so concerned about my "disturbingly high" blood pressure in his words that he did and ekg, blood work, urine samples and wants me to see a specialist to get a kidney ultrasound to try to find a cause, but it's dropped to basically normal after only one dose. Do I still need the further tests or should I be concerned about such a dramatic drop in a matter of only hours? I took the pill probably about 2 hours ago and I know my blood pressure was not just a case of "white coat syndrome" because I went knowing it was high from testing at home.

OK...good on you for following this up with your doctor...
Yes you have gotten a fair result from this dose of beta blocker although I would not be surprised if they order you to increase your dose a bit more yet to get your BP closer to 120/80...or even a bit lower as you are quite young. Beta blockers work in about 10 minutes so do not be alarmed that this has happened , that is great. Your BP was at a very high level.
Yes please keep your appointments and follow up with all the tests you have been ordered to have...it may show up some congenital abnormality that needs to be watched...dont be scared , be thankful that this is being treated...its much better to be treated than to ignore these things and hope they go away.
I hope they include an Echo in the tests they give you and a rip to a Cardio to evaulate your heart...if not please ask/insist that they do this just so you can be sure everything has been checked.

Toprol XL is a Beta Blocker that is used for high blood pressure and people who have angina. Typically any medication begins breakdown immediately but doesn't peak ( max release) for 2-3 hours.Toprol XL is meant to release over a period of time to give you medication coverage throughout a 24 hour time span. I am sure your physician has ask you to return for a blood pressure check soon. You can also go to your local health department and have your Bp checked . I have seen people come in the office with bp reading such as yours and it would be normal at other times.A word of caution only your physician can determine if you have true hypertension vs white coat syndrome. You should feel free to ask your physician about any concerns you have.

Yes it can work fairly fast, but Im wondering if you dont have a condition known as " WHITE COAT SYNDROME", thats where a persons blood pressure goes up due to just being nervous with being in a Dr,s. office and that causes the blood pressure to go up, once out of the Dr,s office the persons pressure goes back down to where it usually was (normal) You need to monitor your pressure @ somewhere other than the Dr,s office to see if it is with in normal ranges. Most Dr,s these days are assuming every one has hypertension (high blood pressure) and starts people on a medication.

i didnt read the whole thing, just the question in bold. blood pressure meds either work fast or slow. the fast-acitng ones are used during emergency while the slow-acting ones are used for maintenance of normal bp by hypertensives. the fast-acting ones can work within minutes (at least 2 to 3).

If it's the right dosage and type, blood pressure meds can work immediately. If they didn't and someone had extremely high pressure, they could stroke out. Be glad yours worked and hopefully will continue to work. Make sure you follow up what the doctor wants you to do.

It normally takes 2-3 weeks of daily doses to have a real effect. And you have to keep taking it, prob. for the rest of your life.
