Why would a 4yo Shitzu X pee in our kitchen every now and then?
Sometimes he has done it when he has been left alone for a few hours at night. He is home alone during the day. At other times, he has pee'd on a couple of items that have been placed on the floor. He had his nose rubbed in it last weekend and put outside for half an hour. So far, so good.

I'm thinking maybe it's a bladder infection. My 6 year old mini schnauzer female was doing this about 2 months ago. We had just got a new puppy and moved. Right away after moving into our new place she started having "accidents" I was irrate because she has ALWAYS been a well trained pooch. I called the vet and he told me to quarantine her into unoccupied room or kennel. We chose the bathroom. The next day, when I went in to take her outside she looked and seemed so depressed....it broke me heart. So, I called the vet and made her an appt. ASAP. The Dr. did an ultrasound and said it appeared as though she may have a bladder infection. He proceeded by putting Iris on oral antibiotics. She finished out the meds. but unfortunately went back to those unsavory habits. The vet has now boiled it down to jealousy over the new pup.
Now, I am not a Dr. by any means so I'm only advising because of my current situation. Perhaps he is having some seperation anxiety of something else is causing him to "act up". If you can't think of anything I suggest you press foward to the veteranarian. He/She will be able to look at kidneys (for stones) and bladder for images suggesting bladder infection. I must tell you that my vet was wanting to pull a urine sample and proceeded to inject a needle directly into her bladder and that really caught me off guard and scared me. Of course, my dog had a fit and he decided not to go thru with it even tho he was in....yeah...I was upset. Make sure you ask the vet how he/she is going to take one before they just inject them full monty. I was dissapointed.
We are both convinced she was acting out irrationally and this has now ceased. If by chance it does happen, I usually quarantine her and scold her. That sounds harsh, but she thinks she is a kid and not a dog anyhow. And that is kind of how we treat her.
Good luck to you! I hope everything works out well! Keep us posted.

Rubbing his nose in it only reinforces the bad behavior, things like this have to be ignored so he understands that peeing inside = no attention. If you punish him for peeing he'll think you are mad at the mess on the floor, next time he'll hide his pee and you won't find it so you need to ignore this behavior. Putting him outside as a "time out" is wasted on a dog, he's a dog not a child he will not understand why you've put him outside, in fact if he likes it outside then all you've done is "reward" him. You need to ignore.
What has changed in the house? Is he fixed? If he's peeing on items then he's "marking" or he does not like the smell of the new items. How often is he taken out to pee, is he getting out enough for a dog of his size? Remember, small bladder means more trips outside to potty.
Dogs don't like change and they show it by exhibiting bad behavior, if he's not getting out enough then he's got no choice but to pee. An adult dog can only hold it for 10 hours maximum, a smaller breed dog for only 1/2 that time.
Look at what might have changed or maybe what YOU aren't doing, don't blame your dog.

You have to house train your pup,
it will make your life with your dog enjoyable..
try this training tips:
The key to rock-solid housetraining is to start the day your dog comes home. If you stick closely to the following routine, you should be able to housetrain an adult dog within a week, or less.
1. Take time off to housetrain your dog.
2. Start using a crate the day you bring him home.
3. Give your dog at least six bathroom breaks daily.
4. Shower him with praise when he does a good job.
5. Don't punish him for accidents you haven't seen.

Rubbing his nose in it is old fashioned, outdated and cruel and NO WAY to treat your dog. If your dog is urinating it is because of either bad training, because the dog may have a medical problem, or because it is left too long on its own without a chance to relieve itself.
Find out the cause and address accordingly, not by ill treating.

First please do not rub your dogs nose in his urine. Do you do that with a child? Research alternatives. He may be peeing when left alone to 'tell' you that he doesn't want to be alone. He may consider the kitchen floor 'his' area. When you put something on the floor he is marking it. Is he fixed?

It could be any of the above answers, or it could be seperation anxiety or the dog just feels neglected. I am only saying this because we rescued a dog from going to the pound that the owner said was going to the bathroom in her room. We got the dog and he hasn't had one single accident....he had been neglected. Nobody showed him attention or affection....poor pooch!

Was he previously housebroken?
If so it may be due to a medical problem and you should consult a vet if your dog cannot control it's bladder.
You are also not training him in the correct way, 'rubbing his nose in it' is a disgusting 'training method' - it teaches him nothing, other than to be fearful or vicious.

he is marking his spot and showing every one that wharever he is peeing on is his. my little poochi has done the same and i scold him and show him the area and put him right out and he has been good. he is not altered yet and they do tend to do this at times. when u see him cock his leg or the mess just show him and ask him what he did then put him out and it should stop after a while. good luck
