What is the one drop rule?

I just saw this in a post about Obama. I was raised in Europe so I don't know some terms. Can anyone explain this? I think it has something to do with race if that helps. African American or Caucasian?

Update:

Miss Thing - thank you! That sounds absurd though. This is really true? Then a good percentage of whites would be black.

It is a part of the Jim Crow law that if you have one small part of black blood in you you are black.

This is funny though. It was ok for the small percentage blacks, but not the small percentage Native American. To claim Amerind you must have a higher percentage, at least 1/4 to claim.

It is truly a double standard. As late as the Korean War many southern soldiers wanted to make sure where the blood came from in fear of receiving black blood. Many nearly died because of this absurdity. I never heard of any of this happening in Vietnam, but I'm surprised.

African American is not a race. There are 3 major races and African American is not one of them.

Africa is a continent of 53 different countries. Egypt, Morocco, and Tunisia are in Africa. South Africa is comprised of 10% white.

    Not all Africans are black.

Not all black people are from Africa.

In the USA, a person with any trace of African ancestry is considered black unless having an alternative non-white ancestry which he or she can claim, such as Native American, Asian, Arab, or Australian aboriginal. It developed most strongly out of the binary culture of long years of institutionalized slavery.

Here you can be 1/16 black and claim African American

White man made that ridiculous "rule" up during slavery. And ignorant people just ran with it after that for decades upon decades.

Read the example below. It may help you to understand more.

    TY Paladin. You got it.

Oh, and you're right Queen. If there are people who think of themselves as "white" that believe in that "rule", and they have a black ancestor somewhere in their family tree, then by the simple 'logic' of that "rule, ... they are black too. A lot of them would probably be surprised to find that out lol.

one drop of pure African blood ( dominate gene) makes you black..

One parent could be mixed with Slavenian and German

the other parent, white, mexican , and black. but the white people back in the days recognized them as black.

So its not a good thing.

Black Women that were raped by the slave owners had children that were mixed but got flak for it by the blacks and by the whites. So to disown the "white faced black person" they came with the ignorant" one drop rule!

It means that if you have even one ancestor who was black (in other words, one drop of "black" blood in you), then you are black. If true, that would mean that a lot of the people who hate blacks may actually be black themselves!

It means if you have any black ancestry you're black no matter how white you look.Even if you look whiter than the white person that told you this.

It had to do with segregation. People were classified as "white" or "colored" based on their parentage. Having any black ancestry at all meant that a person was required to sit in the back of the bus, attend segregated "colored" schools, drink from "colored" water fountains, not permitted to enter anywhere the owners refused to allow them to enter, and they were only permitted to marry another "colored" person. For a pale-skinned person who had been classified as "colored" to attempt to "pass" as white was a crime.
