How long should I keep the E-Collar on my dog after being neutered?

Question

I got the collar because he first ripped out his stitches, then ripped out his staples.  He clearly doesn't like the e-collar, but it's for the best.  The vet is having me come in 10 days after the surgery to get the latest stitches removed - should I wait until then to take the cone off?  Or, would it be okay to take it off earlier?

We left it on for our puppy the full 10 days because we thought it would be more dramatic to take it off and put it back on.  I would think you would leave it on the full 10 days, since your dog keeps ripping the stitches.  I guess if you take it off, and it was a bad idea, you can always put it back on.

You can try taking it off of him for a little while when you're there to keep an eye on him. If he starts ripping the stitches again then put it back on him. If he leaves it alone, then you may only need to use it when you're not there to watch him.

Best thing you can do for your dog is to do what the vet recommends. If you can`t watch him the whole time leave it on. Just one bite at the stitches can cause them to rip. Been there done that. Good luck !!

well only you know what your dog will do,, and if history repeats itself, he is going to mess with the stitches..  right>?   so leave it on

Since he has already done some damage, keep using it. Maybe take it off when he is right with you and you can watch him.
