Bad reaction to rabies vaccine, help please?

My girlfriend just had her 1 year and 3 month old shih tzu vaccinated for rabies. The dog weighs 11.2 pounds and is swollen on her mouth and eyes. The swollen areas are red and a little puffy. We can't get her to the vet till tomorrow so I need something other than benadryl that would help. The benadryl the vet told us to give to her isn't working at all. What else can I do or give her to help with the swelling of her face?

Update:

Thanks she got the vet on the phone and we are bringing her in now.

PLEASE get that dog to the emergency vet.

my dog had the same reaction to that shot. and it led to anaphylaxis. as in, he died from suffocation! they have a shot they can give them that ends the reaction. if a vet says a reaction is no big deal, see another vet.

Your vet needs to sign a wavier from now on stating your gf's dog is not healthy enough to receive the rabies vaccine.

Did she do combo shots or single shots?

Only do minimal shots unless she plans to board the dog.

Nothing can be done for the swelling. If it closes her throat and you are not already at the vet, then there isnt much hope.

Put ice on it too. It will constrict the blood vessels.

Once swelling stops, put heat on it, which is usually after 24 hours of swelling. Use common sense and dont put the ice or heat directly on the dog without a barrier in between.

Benadryl is the only safe thing other than what a vet would have. As long as she can breath and the face doesn't get more swollen, don't worry she will be fine, it will just take a while to go down.

  • Are you giving the correct dosage of Benedryl? How long ago was it that you gave it to him? Is he breathing OK? Is he able to drink fluids? You need to watch him very closely and If it's been a while since your gave the correct dosage and the benadryl still isn't working, you need to find an e-clinic in the area. Rabies reactions could be life-threatening.

Your dog has to be seen by a vet now. At the very least, please call the emergency vet & let him/her know that the benadryl isn't working.

ETA: Glad to hear you're bringing her in. I hope she's feeling better soon!

at the beginning, there is not any distinction between the shot given for a one-twelve months and a three-twelve months. it rather is the precise comparable shot; the categorization lies contained in the documentation. The canine gets a one-twelve months vaccine if it rather is been extra advantageous than a twelve months because of the fact the final rabies shot, apart from specific states and their particular regulations. The canine gets a three-twelve months vaccine if it rather is been extra advantageous than 8 months, yet below an entire twelve months because of the fact the final one, returned excepting some state regulations.

there is nothing else you can use the dog needs an adrenaline shot to help her keep her breathing open & to stop the swelling she needs what is called prednisone and she needs it right away. my own personal experience will severe allergic reactions.....the vet either needs to open the place up right away or help you find and ER. something has to be done.

Did she have more than one shot at once?

This happened to my dog, she is 10lbs, and when she had multiple vaccinations at once, her face swelled up.

I dont care HOW, but you HAVE to call the vet or get her there. MAKE sure you tell them that you gave her benedryl. She /can/ die from this...

You need to take the dog to an emergency pet hospital now before the dogs throat closes up and it cant breathe.

I would call the vet again or an emergency animal hospital and ask.
