Can you run an old DOS/Windows game on a laptop running Vista?
I want to download and play Cyber Empires, a 17 year old game...but when I download and extract the files, I can't play the game. Help!

Yes, there is a free application available which will do this for you. It's called DOSBox and is available from the link in my sources.
Cyber Empires is supported, DOSBox have a list online for you to check:

Boy, you're asking for a lot!
First of all, games that old probably required by-hand changes to the Autoexec.bat file. In Vista, there is such a file, but I'm not sure it's used any more.
Second the game may well have used its own keyboard and video drivers. Sound, if any, would have been via an ancient sound board that may not even have an emulation in Vista today.
Your best bet is to create a shortcut to the main executable (.exe) file, then right-click the shortcut, select properties and play around with Compatibility tab. I would select Windows 95 for a starter and keep my fingers crossed. Seventeen years ago puts it back in the Windows 3.x era.
Much good luck.

no you can't install the old windows like 98 in vista laptop
reason: hardware not supported by that OS. and also you can't find driver made for that OLD OS by that or any laptop manufacturer.
yes one thing you can run that. go that game's executable, i mean the application file and than:
go to properties (by right clicking and selecting the properties of that program)
--> compatibility (tab)
--> check mark before "RUN THIS PROGRAM IN COMPATIBILITY MODE FOR"
and than chose your operating system below
this may help you
have a nice day.

Do a search on google for 'DOSBOX'.
It's a small program you install and then follow the instructions and you can run very old DOS games on your computer. It works fine on my Windows XP and I play Duke Nukem and many other DOS games.
Do another search on Free DOS games and you'll find a slew of games to play in that DOSBOX.

It's a bit old--you have to run it in the compatibility mode, and I don't even think it goes back that far.
When all else fails, you can use Sun Microsystems' xVM VirtualBox--it's a "virtualization software" which allows you to concurrently run more than one OS on your computer as I remembered one of the choices was MS-DOS.
Please don't think I am being rude, if you do not feel that you are up to it, it may not be worth the trouble.
