My laptop keyboard is non-responsive. What's wrong and what can I do to fix it?

I have a Dell, intel centrino duo, ispiron E1405. i dunno if any of that helps, but there it is. The keyboard is completely dead; none of the buttons i press respond. The finger pad and right and left clicker still work, but that's it. I've been told I probably have a virus, but I don't know what to do about it. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Well, I don’t know if it is a virus.

Make simple test to find out the origin of the problem and then fix it.

First, I don’t think is a virus. You can test your keyboard in the start-up before it loads the operative system. One way is to press the Pause/Break key and see if the first screen you look when the computer is on freeze. If it works, the keyboard it’s working well and the problem is in the operative system.

Another way to test the keyboard on the start-up is to get in to the BIOS settings. Maybe you don’t know nothing about BIOS but is the main configuration for your computer, not for the operative system (like windows), for the mainboard.

To enter the BIOS, turn on the computer and look for the first screen for an indication to press a key to enter the BIOS (also calls CMOS setup). For some computer is the “delete” key, for others is F1, F2, F10, ESC. I think is the F2 key for Dell Ispiron. Press that key a few times immediately after you turn on the computer.

Anyway, if you can get in to the bios, it means that the keyboard works.

If you try this and the keyboard don’t respond, the problem is inside the computer (hardware). Maybe the connection between the keyboard and the mainboard.

    Solution:

    - If the keyboard works outside of the operative system, it can be a virus so install Avira Antivirus PE (it’s free) and update it. It’s the best antivirus. Scan the hard drive and see if it finds a virus. If the problem persists, you need to format the hard drive and reinstall windows. Note: before you format the computer, backup all your files in another computer or DVD…

    - If the problem it’s in the hardware, take your computer to fix in a specialized local. They may need to disassemble the laptop.
