Hey Peresphone...yeah I still love 70's pop. Back in the day it was sometimes the only music my parents and I could really agree on...so it was a nice way to bond.
The Carpenters, James Taylor, Cat Stevens, The Staple Singers, Gilbert O'Sullivan, Wayne Newton, The Captain & Tennille, Linda Ronstadt, Abba, Maria Muldaur, Neil Sedaka, Bill Withers...
I still remember not knowing what to buy my parents for Christmas, and in the end settling on a Neil Diamond record for Dad, and a Carpenters record for Mom...and I did this several times! Lol...they were always happy!
Mom still plays these Carpenters classics:

And Dad can still be found grooving away to Neil:

But back in the 70's the term "Pop" had a much different meaning than it does today, and encompassed a much wider spectrum...even artists like Elvis Costello, David Bowie, The Cars, Jethro Tull, Rick James, The Clash, Santana, Frank Zappa, Led Zeppelin, ect etc, were lumped into the category of "Pop" by magazines, record stores, radio stations...
I'd definitely prefer the old pop from the 60's and 70's over the crap they refer to as pop these days!
NP: Largo al Factotum/The Barber of Seville - Leo Nucci
Thanks GreenEye!

Yeah 80's Man, my parents are nearly 80 years old, and they still know how to pop! Lol

Yes, even most of the Pop artists were good in the 70's like: Cat Stevens, Elvis Presley, Gordon Lightfoot, Carole King, Rod Stewart, James Taylor, Neil Diamond, Bread, Simon & Garfunkle, Stevie Wonder, Jim Croce, and many others.
Of course you also had: The Osmonds, Jackson 5, Bee Gees, Carpenters, Barry Manilow, John Denver, Bay City Rollers, etc.
Edit: Uhlan, I remember disco but it was too bad to include here. It's even worse than Muskrat Love.
Check out my latest question to see just how bad it was.
Edit; Smiley, That Welk video was hilarious but I was expecting Cher to walk out any minute! He looked eeringly similar to Sonny.

Hmmm. I'm guessing a lot of you didn't live through the 70s.
I've read all the above answers and all of them miss a huge part of 70s pop - DISCO music.
I was there. I was born in the late 50s, so I was a teenager growing up the Midwest of America (Ohio) during virtually all of the 1970s.
From about 74 to 78 all you heard on the radio, on TV, in the clubs was DISCO. It was everywhere and it was horrible. I don't think it is possible to overstate how ubiquitous DISCO was in popular culture in America during the mid 1970s.
I will forever have to live with the terrible shame that my generation was responsible for inflicting DISCO on the nation and the rest of the world.

The 70s music was powerful, it as well as the decades prior opened the door and inspired musicians even today. Many 90s and today fans will list many 70s artists as inspirations for them. For me, it was the true stage that coined the term, "rock music." Vast amounts of excellent guitarists and drummers came out of the 70s if not earlier. The 1970's in rock and roll were more than memorable, they are forever etched in the music pages of our minds. Being a rock fan, I do appreciate the pop side of music. Carly Simon, James Taylor, Carole King, all icons in their own right. They all have given such wonderful contributions to the music world.

LOL Persephone, Muskrat Love, lol.
I liked the 70's pretty well, but it had a lotta Fail too (Andy Gibb, Barry Manilow etc etc) The 80's were pretty much the greatest decade for Pop Music in My opinion.
I can way top that second link for sheer atrociousness

The 70's just flat out rocked...evident if anyone remembers The Midnight Special or Don Kirchners Rock Concert that came on in the wee wee hours of the morning...which were IMO the first real music videos....Here's my music take on the 70's....

Every decade has their great songs as well as the songs that were bad when they first played and worst afterwards.
I think more great music came out of the seventies then any other decade.
Almost half of my top list reside in the 70's with songs from alan parsons, boston, bowie, elo, elton john, the guess who, heart, jim croce, zeppelin, moody blues, stones, steely dan, sweet, three dog night, and wings

I love Muskrat Love! America's amazing! I'm not a fan of Carly Simon, though... But Womanizer's my favorite song of '08.
