How does one punish a 17 year old who killed his parents over a video game (Halo 3)?

ELYRIA, Ohio – A judge Monday rejected the defense that a teenage boy opened fire on his family because he was addicted to video games, convicting him of wounding his clergyman father and killing his mother after they fought over a video game.

Lawyers for Daniel Petric, 17, didn't contest that the boy shot his parents in October 2007, but insisted his youth and video game addiction made him less responsible. But Common Pleas Judge James Burge disagreed and pointed to evidence the boy plotted the crime for weeks.

Petric was convicted of aggravated murder, attempted aggravated murder and other charges. He faces a maximum possible penalty of life in prison without parole. The judge didn't set a sentencing date.

Prosecutors said Petric planned to kill his parents because he was angry that his father would not allow him to play the video game "Halo 3," in which players shoot alien monsters that have taken over the Earth.

The judge did the right thing, given the laws. "Video game addiction" is not legal insanity.

The prosecutor describes the kid as a stone killer and there's nothing in the news story to suggest the defense has done anything to dispel that idea. There's no legal insanity that would justify the mental ward, and you can't put a kid like this in the juvie system. That leaves only prison for real.

The father is a minister. What a surprise.

Oh, and for all these people who are typing "death penalty." Read the question and the article. Death penalty is off the table in this case. Learn something about law and don't be so f---ing stupid. Or at least don't advertise it.

I think he deserves to be locked in prison and be brutally tortured every day for the rest of his life.

A video game was not worth killing his parents over. What he could have done was waited one more year until he was free from his parents and then played the game until he was blue in the face. I love my mom with every fiber of my being, and I could never imagine killing her. Especially over something that stupid.

What a dumbass. I hope he does NOT get away with this. 17 years old is old enough to know what he was doing. And what's worse, he was smiling in his picture like he is proud of what he did. Pretty heartless, if you ask me.

Teenagers like him are the reason why a lot of older people have no respect for us. The bad ones ruin it for the good ones, and then everyone assumes we're all terrible.

The reason I say life in prison instead of death is because death is the easy way out. Being in prison for the rest of his life, knowing his freedom has been taken away forever is more of a punishment. But I guess we all have our own opinion about it, right?

Take away his video games first of all and then stick him in prison where he belongs. I don't get what's wrong with the youth of today... I'm only a year older than he is and I know that I would never have thought it would be okay to kill your parents, people you can never replace, over a game that you can always buy a new copy of. It's stupid.

17 yrs. is way above the age where children should realize consequences. He may be mentally unstable and should be evaluated. I don't think an addiction to games is any kind of a defense especially at 17. I believe he should get help but not escape prison.

    2 & 3 -- definitely not one.....They get out at 21, way too soon....and

evem 3 could be too lenient.....Enough of this kind of garbage!!!

And what about the 8 yr old who shot his own father and another man

out in Az., I think it was.....

ENOUGH with the obsession with GUNS and the NRA!!! I am not going

on about hunting and all that. I am upset with innocent people being murdered in this country

I know there are other ways that people use to commit murder...but as

always guns are just to easy to get and to use...and nut cases get one

so easily because they've been "under the radar" and no one realized they were a ticking time bomb....

Chapman.....Hinkley.....the kids at Columbine.....The fireman in Cleveland, Ohio who shot 5 people, killed 3, just over FIREWORKS...

and he had all kinds of guns in his house...and if he DIDN'T have his precious guns RIGHT THERE...He would have had to deal with his

noisy" neighbors just like other people do...call the police or put up with it...Don't pick up a bloody gun and go on a rampage....and I am NO liberal by ANY definition.....This is just insane...>:(

    What about the kid

-- teenager -- who thought he was a vampire and murdered the parents

of one of his "vampire" cult and his mother had a "crush" on one of his teenage cult members.....They kept moving back and forth between Fl.

and Ky. The girl's name was Heather and she's some sort of artist. She

wasn't held responsible for any of it....oh and her parents car was stolen as well.....

And what about the latest one...in Seattle...the guy that went over the

edge and shot the people - in-laws and his ex-wife -- and shot a little girl in the face....He was dressed as santa claus....and then he blew the house up and probably killed everyone that he didn't kill with his gun....This just happened less than a month ago on Christmas Eve!!!!!
