I think that this song is about a relationship where possibly both people are argumentative or maybe she brings that side out of side of him too, he is getting frustrated now because she is possesive or jealous- the crowded room and the wave that drowns the whole town sugggests to me a feeling of suffocation no matter where he goes, it will even reach him over the power lines that the wave will take out. They will even fight long distance and box the stars, from mars because her emotions are so strong. She has an intense and violent love for him and the night turns a perfect shade of dark blue. Thats kind of how I see it but I think no matter what the writer really has in mind, words can always be left to so many interpretations.... Thats what great about it- sometimes there is no one answer.

this is not THE meaning, nor is it a MEANING per se as much as its an interpretation but... i think the flooding and fires part is there to put trivial problems in perspective. the boxing the stars part makes our world seem small as well.
"and when the water reached the west coast it took the powerlines and me and you and the whole town underwater and there was nothing we could do" that has always just reminded me of a world without modern conveniences where people spent more time with people. rather than being "all alone in a crowded room" all the time. i don't think its got anything to do with the apocalypse or anything.
