My quaker parrot keeps going to the bottom of the cage?
He used to do this as a baby all the time. Now he is doing it again. He goes down there and tears at the newspaper at the bottom. There is a grid several inches from the bottom.
I don't think he is sick ... i know people say birds do that when they are dying but i dont think that is the case. i think its boredom. I put a few new toys in his cage, maybe i should rearrange everything?

he is sick and needs to get to the vet. you also need to provide a bigger cage with fresh food daily and new toys.

My parrot is not receptive to his cage being changed. When you are presenting any new toys I was told to let the toy next to the cage for maybe a week or more before putting it into their cage. The other day I happened to lay book on the coffee table which is three away from his cage and he would not go on that side of the cage.
The vet explained to me that there should not be any paper on the bottom of the cage, only if it is covered with a wire grid about 4 inches above the paper.
Your parrot is probably just investigating his cage to make sure everything is where he left it . I don't think he is sick.

I don't think you're bird is sick either. You would know if he was.
I think he is bored. Birds need constant stimulation, especially if they do not have another bird to interact with.
Definately change his cage around! He will appreciate the change of scenery. I used to change my birds cage around once a month. After I did so, she would spend a good hour sitting there taking it all in, and after it had sank in, she'd spend forever exploring what she thought was new surrounds.
Just make sure that if he has a favourite toy, you always make it accessible. Birds can also become obsessively attached!
New toys are a great idea. Just like people, they get bored looking and playing with the same thing day in and day out. Get something he can interact a little with. Something that moves when he touches it, or makes a noise. You could also try something he can safely chew on, like a toy with wooden fruit and rope ect on it. Try www.birdsupplies.com. They've got a great range of toys.
Try and get him something he can nibble on during the day. A seed treat or cuttlebone ect will go down well.
My bird used to go to the bottom of her cage alot to. She used to spend alot of time foraging around down there. If you don't mind him being down there, do what I did and buy some wood shavings to spread over the bottom of his cage. Buy some bird treats, like little pellets ect, and sprinkle them throughout the shavings. This should keep him amused for hours!
Last but not least, make sure your bird gets some time out of his cage each day. It will make him happier througout the time that he is in his cage, and it will also allow him to excercise...as flying or running around gets their heart pumping.
I ALSO AGREE WITH JOEWEBB, YOUR BIRD MAY WANT TO MATE. IT IS MORE COMMON FOR A FEMALE TO FORGAGE AROUND AT THE BOTTOM OF THE CAGE IF SHE WANTS TO MATE, SHE IS PREPARING HER SURROUNDS - ITS CALLED NESTING. HOWEVER THERE IS EVERY CHANCE YOUR MALE WANTS TO MATE AND HE TO IS PREPARING HIS SURROUNDS.
MARVIN - BIRDS ARE NATURALLY SUSPICIOUS AND GUARDED, HOWEVER YOUR BIRD SOUNDS AS THOUGH HE IS UNUSUALLY WARY. I'M A BIRD LOVER AND NEVER HAVE I HEARD OF LEAVING A TOY OUTSIDE OF A CAGE FOR A WEEK OR MORE BEFORE INTRODUCING IT TO THE CAGE. IF YOU PUT THE TOY IN HIS CAGE AND HE DOESN'T LIKE IT, TAKE IT OUT. SIMPLE. IT MAY BE THAT YOUR BIRD IS SUSCEPTIBLE TO CHANGE BECAUSE HE'S NEVER EXPERIENCED IT. IN THE WILD, A BIRDS ENVIRONMENT CHANGES WITH EACH MINUTE!
AS I PREVIOUSLY SAID, CHANGING THE CAGE AROUND IS FINE. HOWEVER IF HE HAS A FAVOURITE TOY, JUST MAKE SURE YOU PUT IT IN A PROMINANT AND ACCESSIBLE POSITION AS THEY CAN BECOME QUITE OBSESSIVE & ATTACHED. AS LONG AS HE CAN STILL SEE WHAT HE CONSIDERS TO BE HIS COMFORT ZONE, HE SHOULD BE ABSOLUTELY FINE.

And do you give it at least two hours of free time outside his cage?
