Severe leg cramps!!!?

My granny gets these really bad "leg cramps" but she won't go to the doctor and it REALLY worries me. I seriously don't think they r just leg cramps b/c she ends up crying and literally on the floor and there's been NOTHING we can do about it. They just stop when they want to and eventually leave all together and then pop up randomly a week or even months later. I don't understand but does anyone know what this could be or if there really are leg cramps this bad and random? Anything that will help it?its pretty scary to watch and know there's no way to help.....

There's a very simple fix for lower leg cramps. It is caused by a person not getting enough Calcium in their diet. Your Granny needs to drink milk every day and take a Calcium supplement. Add some Vitamin D also. Muscles need calcium to work properly and if they don't get it the calcium will come out of the bones. That's bad. Then you get very hard leg cramps and it's random. And yes they hurt a lot. If she does not like milk have her drink Non-fat milk. Sometimes it's the high fat content of whole milk that people hate. She'll be fine in a day or two. She can even eat some Tums or Rolaids to get the calcium.

People confuse Calcium and Potassium. Yes, bananas have potassium but you have to eat 17 to get the daily requirement of potassium. They aren't that great and won't help with leg cramps.

Those do sound pretty awful. Poor grandma really should go see a doctor. From what I know, it sounds like she has a problem with her nerves in her legs. There is a test that would show it and several meds that help with nerve pain. This would explain why it happens randomly since nerves can misfire at random. But also, she can be low on potassium so I would suggest having her eat more bananas, which are an excellent source of that. Hope that helps...

Does she drink enough water? My doctor told me when I was pregnant to make sure and drink water to help with the leg cramps I would get. Maybe call her doctor and just ask about it. There might be something in her medical history that could be the cause. Then next time she's there for a check up, the doctor can bring it up.

I know often times I get leg cramps when I'm dehydrated. Simple as that. Often times I get them in the middle of the night and end up jumping out of bed to walk it off. It sucks.

    Hope this helps!
