Why can't we text from our iPhones?

We got iPhones about 2 weeks ago and still can't text to anyone. We did the patches and looked for apps but can't find it. Do we need to go back to the store or are missing something?

    Your iPhone is probably defective (software malfunction) You need to go back to the store and do an exchange.

    try SMS you should be able to!

    are they activated??
