Best for eliminating odors is activated carbon - not regular charcoal -it has to be activated and it is so SO much better than baking soda. There is a product made just for this called Fridge It odor absorbers. I've been using for years as well as just about everyone I know. Not only great for fridge (and believe me, the worst odors) but I have friends use it all around particularly those smelly areas like under kitchen and bathroom sinks, next to trash, closets, etc. They really are pretty good and totally unscented which I like. There are some similiar products that i've tried but not good.

I typically buy on line at www.innofresh.com from the manufacturer. Very easy and I definitely would recommend these for fridge odor. You may need to put several in your fridge if it's really bad. The food network even had a segment talking about how great activated carbon is on the Food Detective.

clean the inside & outside of the fridge well with warm soapy water. move the fridge and clean behind & under it, too. if the smell doesn't resolve, consider using a box or 2 of baking soda to absorb the smell. before adding foods, ensure that the temps are correct.

Wash it out very, very thoroughly with a solution of bicarbonate of soda and then leave the door open for a few days. It is really important to make sure that there are no places where food or juices could be lurking. There might be drainage channels for defrosted water that are impossible to get to that need washing out really well.

Take a plastic trash bag and place several charcoal briquettes inside. Leave them in the fridge for a couple of days to filter the odor.

Baking soda is an excellent odor absorber. You can also wipe it down with vinegar or put some vinegar in a cup to absorb odors, as well.

You can let the baking soda inside your ref after cleaning it.

Use activated charcoal. It absorbs a lot more than baking soda.
