The notion that picture is worth a thousand words has always been true when it comes to the relationship between photography Photo essays by Jacob Riis helped alert readers to the plight of those in new York's slumms in the early 1900s. Photojournalists also provided some of the most compelling records of the dust Bowl in the 1930s.
Photography also has give viewers entree into worlds they might otherwise never have experienced, such as Woodstock. They have documented the gallantry and horror of war, the better for both sides to inspire those on both sides of the ooilitical spectrum.
