Is there anything wrong with extending a handshake to a girl?

So I officially introduced myself to a girl in my class the other day. We had sat by each other a couple of days in a row but she didnt know my name. So after class I introduced myself to her and told her my name and extended my hand. She took it and said nice to meet you, yadda yadda yadda.

So later I'm telling my brother about it, and he says it isnt proper for a man to extend his hand to a woman. Is he right? Should I not have shaken hands with her?

thats soooo cute! its not improper... unless u dont let go or rape her or something.... :(... anyways... i prefer hugs... guuys always shake hands... so when guys i know try to shake my hand, i ignore them or just lunge at them and give them a hug without their consent... im kinda odd.. but apparently i'm also rly kinky... so it balances out...

A man should never extend his hand to a woman unless she extends hers first. That's always the way I've been taught, on a Professional level anyway. Times do change, however so maybe it's OK now. She apparently wasn't offended by the gesture if she said "nice to meet you" Just be careful in the future.

Your brother is real old school. It used to be considered improper for a guy to shake a woman's hand. Today it's not like that. I shake hands with guys all the time. I also shake hands with women. It's the 21st century and that's how it goes. Trust. ';-)

In some cultures, extending your hand to a woman for a handshake, or initiating any sort of touching, is very offensive. Sort of a "how dare you deign to touch me without my permission" thing. But it's not necessarily wrong.

your brothers an idiot. Of course its ok to shake a girls hand. In the business world and social world. A hug is way over zealous and nothing is just rude. She prob thought you were nice and chivalry is not yet dead

I'd suggest you don't rely on your brother for any ettiquette or life skills advice because he is obviously socially inept. Of course it is okay to shake hands with a woman. What is your brother's problem?

I'm dying to hear more of your brother's scintillating advice. LOL.

Your brother is wrong, it is completely proper to extend a handshake to a lady.

Unless you're a young professional or in university/college, you usually don't shake hands with someone you just meet.

If you're a teen in high school, people are going to think you're really formal. But it's perfectly okay.

Next time, just wave a hi.

No its fine, if you like like her dont seem to formal and proper all the time, girls sometimes find that hard standard to live up to..

i DONT see anything wrong with it.
