Any time you're on the internet, there can be weird people. Yahoo! Answers is safe in that it's not a place for people looking to hook up, or pervs looking for underaged teens. There are a LOT of very young people using this site... and hopefully all of them use it safely. Yahoo puts a disclaimer as to the reliability of answers.
My advice to asking and answering questions here:
- don't ask very personal questions (i.e. sex, some health issues that you should talk to you mom about, boyfriends, etc. I know people do, but sometimes, depending on what is said, that occasional weirdo that can show up on any site where people communicate with each other, could use it in a harmful way.
No matter where you are on the internet, it's up to you to know how to use it safely. Do not EVER:
- give out your email address
- your full name (it shouldn't be part of your actual email address
- your home phone or cell phone number
It's safe to set your profile to allow email as ALL email addresses remain anonymous at ALL times. At no time is the sender's or recipient's email address revealed. To reply to an email sent through Yahoo! Answers, you click the "Reply to this message" link that's in the email... NOT the usual "Reply" button you would use for your regular emails.
Lastly, Yahoo is a known, reliable, site and has safety measures in place so that we are all as safe as possible.
So as long as your 13 years old or older, tell your Mum, this is a safe, friendly place for teens. Be thankful that your mum is involved.

I don't know your age,but I would have to say that NO web page where people can type a message to leave for anyone is safe, you cant see who the person is on the other side, so you don't leave personal contact information ( phone number, address ). The world is full of weird and wonderful people and if we were to try to avoid them all, NOBODY would leave their homes, meet new friends online or offline etc, you get the idea right? I would say yahoo answers is safe as long as the general safety usage of any online web page service is put into practice and a lot of people would be getting a lot of good advise and help here, you need to read all the comments and ignore the ones that are obviously not good, the thumbs up and thumbs down is a good idea and so is the best answer as it helps others with the same type of question. Sorry this is so long and i hope I have made sense to you

Speaking as one of those "weird people," I would have to say that it is unsafe.
If you can handle occasional bad language, and frequent absurdity, then it's safe. If you have your own mind and can take what people say here with a grain of salt, then it's safe. If you're the kind of kid who'll set your trailer home on fire just because you saw it on "Beavis and Butthead," then it's not safe.
The *world* is not safe, kid and kid's mom. It has its full share of weirdoes and crazy people; but like inoculation against disease, you need some exposure to learn to tell the good guys from the idiots. That way, you don't end up accidentally voting them into office or something.
For relatively straghtforward questions, like math, you'll get a reasonable percentage of straightforward answers. For more abstract questions, you'll get a lot of opinions of widely varying quality. But you'll get honest input straight from the horse's mouth (or other openings).
It's kind of like salad; it has its nutritive value, but there's also the occasional bug. And you don't want to make it the only part of your diet.
My best advice is for your mom to surf Y!A with you. She can keep an eye out for your safety, you'll spend some quality time together, and both of you can learn and be enlightened.
Illegitimi non carborundom, kid, and good luck.

It's pretty safe , the weird people are around , but this site is self policed. If a Q or A is offensive or malicious it only takes two people reporting to remove it.
- How do you think about the answers? You can sign in to vote the answer.

Yes its very safe. It's really useful for finding the answers to really hard questions. The people on it are perfectly normal and everyone is really helpful. If anyone does abuse it (which almost never happens) you can report them and they'll get their accounts deleted. Hope it helps..

Don't EVER give your real name or address out, don't post any pictures of yourself either, because you never know. Tell your mom that it is safe as long as you play it safe by not giving out personal info to complete strangers

All kinds get on here, but as a question-and-answer forum,it's safe. It's not like you're in a chat room.
Suggest to your mom that she can try it for herself and make up her own mind.
