What is your favourite "small" town in Britain?
Now, I know "small" is quite loose but I am thinking of small market type towns really.
Which one do you like? Why? Lovely buildings? A great range of independent shops? Nice community feel?
Interested in your thoughts!
Stacey: Thanks, I agree Lincoln in lovely, but I think people their might be a bit upset with it being classed as a small town!

There is a lovely place in Lincolnshire called Wainfleet All Saints. It has eveyrything you mention and is in an authentic rural area with a real agricultural aspect to it.
It also has bus and rail links to the nearby coast and other larger towns.
There is a lovely mediaeval library building called Magdalen College School, and as well as my eternal need for books, there is inside a local interest museum with some fascinating local history.
There is a river and even a local brewery producing a really fine ale.
We would go and live there in a heart beat, and when circumstances allow it then we will.

I've got a few but I think I'll go with Ludlow.
The emphasis of food and markets, independent retailers...just everything I like really. No huge chain stores ( apart from a woollies ..ooer)Lots of period buildings and historical points of interest.
The castle in the background and just the pace is like something from another age. OK The are a plethora of grey panthers and I've been to 'friendlier' places but for a quintessential English feel..yep..Ludlow :-)
EDIT-LOLOLOL @ Rj x- I never in my life thought I'd see Irby get a mench on Answers OMG lolololol.

Faversham in Kent ... the market square is beautiful and there's some lovely old streets around just bursting with character ... at the same time it's not a picture-postcard quaint old place that's just for tourists, it's very much a living working town

St. Davids City on the Pembrokeshire coast in Wales. It is the smallest city in Wales and possibly Britain. It has an amazing Cathedral in what is essentially a village

Frome, in Somerset. It borders with Wiltshire, and the countryside is amazing!
My grandad lived there so I always look forward to visiting him! The people are always so friendly, there are just enough shops, it's sunny most of the year, and you can go for some great walks! My favourite street in it is this one:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Cheap_St_Frome1....
The only problem is that it's quite far from London...takes a while by car.
