What is the best/free antivirus for windows? and why?

Thank you very much for those who will answer and I appreciate it much. The reason why I'm asking is that my computer crashed just recently because I got inflicted with a virus that caused me not being able to open the system administration/or (CTRL+ALT+DEL) and I'm pissed off since I wasn't able to save or have any backup files that cost me a lot of precious files. Again, thank you.

The best antivirus software (that you have to pay for) is in my opinion two different ones:
Kaspersky- Extremely Secure AV, but really HD intensive excellent choice for desktops
Eset Nod32- Very Low Memory Usage this is HUGE when it comes to a laptop or other mobile device where you might not have the memory to spare like a desktop.
Free AV: Definitely a fan of the open source ClamWin for windows and Clam for Linux, also I like avast but it had trouble getting rid of a couple Trojans that I took care of with bit defender but the problem is windows still says you don't have any anti virus with all the free ones except AVG which as they mentioned is leaving mid January. Hope that helps.I would suggest that you get Avast Home Edition version 4. It now protects against spyware, rootkits,
and other forms of nonvirus malicious software. Best of all, it's free for personal use.
Avast is a very effective and free anti-virus program because it can do
a boot time scan in safe mode and it will remove the entire virus on your PC.
Even those viruses that hide inside the system restore folder.
Windows utilize a restore utility that backs up selected files
automatically to the System volume information /System Restore folder.
This means that an infected file could be stored there as a backup file,
and most anti-virus programs will be unable to delete these files. You
must disable the System Restore Utility to remove the infected files
from the folder if you use another brand of anti-virus. However, you do
not need to do so if you use Avast to do a boot up scan in safe mode.

Background of Avast

The Best Free Anti-virus software. There are two that you might call the best free anti-virus. The top free are Avira, Avast, and AVG. If you want the best detection and removal then you should pick Avira. The only problem with that pick is Avira does not have anti-spyware protection. So you will need to add an anti-spyware program like SuperAntiSpyware. Next is Avast has very high detection rate and is also good at removal of malware. It also has anti-spyware. It is also a very good pick for free protection. Next comes AVG three years ago it was the top free av. How ever it is lacking to many features to recommend it. It does not have anti-rootkit protection. That’s a big deal in today’s malware world. You only have to go to AVG web page and it says it all. Basic Protection only.
If you want the best anti-virus program out there you have to pay for it. Sorry that’s just way it is. Anyone who tells you that free is as good as paid should go to their anti-virus web page and see for themselves that the paid version offer more complete protection.
Panda,Norton do not offer free anti-virus program. You can get Norton free with the google pack, but it is a limited version and does not offer complete protection. So I would stay away from it. Comodo has a free Internet Security Suite you may want to give it a try. It's suppose to do a good job at keeping a clean computer, clean.

I personally have 2 running at the same time, Avira, and Avast, they have always protected me and the reason why is they are lightweight and free the Avira detects 92% of viruses and Avast 89% they detect different viruses and i have never ever had a problem yet norton i crap it killed my pc so i took the cd out and shot it :) for real so i would use avast or avira

I'd go with Avast or Avira as I've had poor experiences with AVG, Norton, Mcafee and Panda.

Download SuperAntiSpyware

- Install, Update and do a Full Scan
I use Avira AntiVir Premium with Comodo Firewall & Defense + which works great ....so i would get Avira and Comodo Firewall (not antivirus since its new its not the best right now)

AVG Free is a really good one, I used to stick with them
Avast! Home is also very good for home users, it does its job well
Comodo is very secure but hard to configure.. I just stick with Kaspersky Internet Security now as a firewall.
SuperAntiSpyware is a very good free program well because its free and it deletes spyware.. however scanning can take some time

A combination is the best for overall protection. I use McAfee, malwarebytes and superanti-spyware to cover all the bases and home plate.
