Has anyone had success with Sylvan Learning Centers and elementary age children?

My daughter does very well in school, but seems to struggle with Math. She's in third grade and I need to do something now before she ends up getting behind in Math completely. I want to get her a tutor, but by using high school or college students, you just don't know what you'll get, although I am sure some are good. I'm curious to know other's experience with Sylvan Learning Centers. And also, does anyone know how much it costs, just for tutoring in Math. She doesn't need help in any other areas.

Update:

I've looked into Kumon, but we don't have on in our area.

I had a classmate who went to Sylvan and even then ended up being held back twice. It is true that was about 15 yrs ago, but it left a terrible impression.

especially in elementary school, I would advise that you run your daughter through drills at home... I'm no sure what she's learning, but surely nothing too advanced, or if it is, it is likely the basics that she needs to review make out multiplication tables :

    .1 2 3 4 5

    11 2 3 4 5

    22 4 6 8 10

    3 ...

    4

    5

(with 10 numbers on each side)

giver her a minute to do them. when she does it all and gets them all right, give her a tougher one (change up the numbers and make them bigger... add fractions...).

If it's division, adapt as necessary.

If she has no problems with this cut down the time limit.

Also look into the Tractenberg method - he was an engineer who spent a year in solitude in a concentration camp and kept his sanity by working out patterns and simpler ways of doing math. After the war he opened a school for mentally handicapped students and apparently the methods were extremely effective as the students could do calculations faster than their parents.

Save yourself a lot of money and pls do try this first.

I would not use Sylvan. Sylvan tutors kids, so they don't necessarily have to pay attention. They also build from what a child is learning now, and not what they have learned. I would recommend Kumon, since Kumon doesn't hold your hand while you learn. It teaches you responsibility, and it lets you do things on your own. It adds to your base so you can figure out things from the base. It's like a nurturing a plant. If you try to water the leaves only, the plant isn't getting much water. But if you water into the soil into the roots, the plant is getting water. Weird comparison, but I couldn't think of a better one. xD

Kumon and Sylvan cost the same, but Kumon is better by far.
