Being good at either painting or drawing doesn't really guarantee you are good at the other.
Drawing is usually more precise and requires more control. While painting can be more abstract and less confined. Some people are just better with a pencil and sketching what they see in front of them. Its really just down to individuality.

All a good painter needs to know is the basics of drawing, and you may be surprised to know that not all great painters relied on good drawing skills to produce some of their work. A painter can get away with a simple rough sketch. Don't wonder too much about the other guy, just concentrate on what you need to do.

Drawing may help a painter in "positioning" what he wants to paint on te canvas, but paint is a very different medium to work with than pencil or charcoal or pen.
I think it really depends on what you mean by "good drawing skills", as some drawing artists make very intricate and detailed drawings where perhaps accuracy and shadowing are important, yet others manage to make a picture alive with just a few lines. I would call it a difference in style, full stop, and art is judged by the one who's seeing it (beauty lies in the eye of the beholder).
The same goes for painting: some painters paint in minute detail, oil / acrylics on canvas, where others manage to create a beautiful picture just by a few aquarel strokes.
Personally, I'd say stick with what you believe you're good at and be glad that it appeals to others...

I think you have to be able to draw to paint well. Painting is a different learned skill than drawing, so just because someone draws well doesn't mean they can paint well. If you think you can't draw, I encourage you to learn to draw. It will make your painting so much better.
If you paint but can't draw, you are a craftsman, not an artist. So many skills used in drawing are essential to painting an original work of art.
All great painters were great draftsmen and many were sculptors as well.

Drawing and painting are two very different arts.
Unfortunately, you do need some drawing to do painting.
Personally (I am NOT good at drawing) I do my introductory studies with dry pastel on coloured paper;;; but everyone has his own ways.
P.S. My painting counsellor says I am better at pastels than at painting, ut I don't want to be a "pastellist" although Manet, for example, did more than well with that medium.

the two do not necessarily go hand in hand. a painter might be fabulous with color and light but if he/she does not work in a realistic style he or she might lack drawing skills. A person who is phenomonal at drawing might know very little about color theory and light. so in a one word answer to your question, no!

I started painting and taught myself a bit. You just have to keep doing it to get better. I would get acrylic paints as they are cheaper than oil. Canvases can be quite expensive though so you could start on A3 paper until you think it would be worth using canvases. The works have good deals on canvases sometimes.

If you want to improve your drawing, get the book "Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain". It does wonders.

it's a different skill although in some ways related.
most artists are both but they do this by getting lots of practice and put in loads of dedication and passion
hope this helps
