I wanted just to add that the British Parliament could have cut the legs out from under the revolutionaries simply by granting them representation without the House of Commons. The colonial population was so small, and had no lords to serve in the upper house, that their voices would have made precisely zero difference in the end. But by including them, the British could have completely destroyed the most universal and pervasive of all arguments for revolt.
