How do I spike my hair properly?

Whenever I use the brush my hair looks like it's all together and it doesnt spike properly , what should i do? , usually i just make my hair a little wet, dry some of the water , then i brush backwards and put on gel?

Update:

I dont want the spikes to be far apart , i want them to be pretty close

wet your hair, rub the gel all over your hands and run them through your hair

Use a gel or mouse specially for spiking hair. or maybe your hair is making an attempt to tell you something.. (j/p) =]. attempt garnier fructis explo putty, or have been given 2 be glued rubber cement, or nicely, something that announces spiking on the bottle.
